Neofinetia falcata forum

Hi,

There is a lot of activity in the Orchid Care forum regarding Neofinetia falcata. I'd like to suggest a Neofinetia falcata forum. Or possibly a Japanese Orchid section to cover Sedirea and other asian species.

thanks for reading.

I think that is a great idea! A Japanese orchid/Asian orchid section would be great that way others can be included, Den's and Cym's.

An Asian Orchid Species forum is a wonderful idea. Since there are many that qualifies under that forum title, I suggest breaking into sub-forums, like Neo. falcata, Chinese Cyms, Den. moniliforme, etc. Otherwise, we'l have another looong thread.

My thoughts on the new section was more around the culture of Japanese orchids which has a really interesting and rich history, collectively terms as Fuukiran. Neofinetia falcata has been cultivated for over 400 years and reason there are so many varieties now is because of this history. There are a select number of species that are included in this cultural phenomenon -- Neofinetia falcata, Den. moniliforme, Sedirea japonica, and Cym. goeringii.

Having an Asian Orchid section would end up covering all the orchids in southern asia (that's a LOT) as well and lose its focus.

So, to clarify my suggestion, what I meant was having a Fuukiran forum or at least a Neof. falcata forum since there are so many posts and threads on just that one species alone.

bkim,

That's a good idea! It's narrowed down to that one species. We should call it Fukiran or Neofinetia falcata Forum.

Great idea! There are many people on this forum who are or will collect the Neofinetia's. I really like the history of the plant and the many different types.

I would like to know more about the other types of Neo's, I have a small booklet about them, but would be good to hear what other people know about them.

I hope that this can happen.

Thanks

I like "Fuukiran Forum" so it covers Neof. falcata, Den. moniliforme, Sedirea japonica, and Cym. goeringii. Those are the major species of Fuukiran.

I fourth that Idea! We have one great big gigantic neo thread, and a bunch of small ones. But I think it would be cool to get them their own section!

I think it's a great idea. Even with a fast connection, going through that looooong thread can be a pain!

bump! The Neo thread is over 400+ posts and there are at least a dozen other Neo threads. And that's not counting all the Sedirea and Den moniliforme threads either... fred?

I think the Neo forum is a great idea! As for right now, You can click on the little arrow next to the last person postings' name, instead of the title of the thread, it will take you to the last post and skip everything in between.

That's the only thing I click on when opening threads I just thought it would be nice to have a section like the project plant sections where everyone has their own thread. Imagine what it would be like if all the Cathy Beck or Naples Night posts were in one thread!

LOL. I guess I'm going to be the only black sheep in this bunch.

I have to disagree with starting a separate forum for Neos. The Neo thread maybe super long, but all the info is there. Think of it this way. If a new forum was made all that information would have to be split and a newbie looking for that wouldn't be able to find it.

Truthfully I would like some of the "loose" Neo threads combined.

Also if a Neo thread was started, then every genera would have to have one. Cattleya would overtake the forum by far.

There are already a couple of threads that are like the Neo thread and they work very well. Kevin's "Grow Space" is over 10,000 views and a lot more posts. The "Epiphyte Grow Project" and the Freclarkera threads are also very long and they too have no problems. But you don't hear members wanting a Catasetum, Moramode, and Fredclarkera forum too

I think it would just be too confusing.

Okay, I'm ready for my lynching now.

Got your flame retardant suit on? Just Kidding. I respect your opinion and you have valid points. I've run forums before and too much organization can often be a bad thing. My argument was that there is already dedicated forums to specific species and Neofinetia falcata gets a lot of posts.

I have to disagree with your argument about a newbie finding information easily. There is a TON of good information in the Neo post, but reading through all 400+ post is not an efficient way of looking for answers.

NO, Jenny you have a good point! That makes sense! How many threads would we have to be able to get everyone's in their own group too? I think the search tool is great as far as pointing newbies in the right direction. Searching is the fun part of researching because you can usually always end up with more helpful information or views to help with other thing too. While the 400+ post thread may be long and require some scanning to find what you are looking for most of us know where to go to find it. When I was new to the forum I spent a few days reading every single thread. Not all newbies will but several do. But I can say I found a whole heap of information and ideas I could use. The same goes with the searches I did. If you type in neofinetia it will pull up all the threads that have anything to do with them.

I vote YES!! This is why I'm joining this forum. Just think it would be fun to share pics and growing info with others who grow many neos... Even if it doesn't happen, still nice to see other peoples' pics of their neos in bloom this season.

Hello and welcome! You should go to the introductions and introduce yourself. What kinds of orchids do you have? Also if you click on user cp in the upper right hand corner you can edit you information and location that way we can give advice for your growing area or learn from you what works in your area!
