Another competition idea.

Just had a brainwave. We've got a general orchid photo competition, how about a competition for the largest phal flower, the most flowers per spike. The longest spike, the largest leaf.

There are all sorts of things we can measure and use a photo to prove. It can be done in the main groups of orchids and would give all sorts of cool ideas. Anything that can be measured and proved

Any feeback would be great, ideas for other competitions and such, and we can see what the admins think

yes that would be good keep it varied, and only run one a month so as not to complicate matters.

Tom, size doesn't matter. Flower size is heavily dependent on breeding so a competition for flower size means that only those members who grow Phals bred for large flower size could win. It's just my opinion but I think there are better things to award than size.

Tom, I like the idea. Awards for good plants... flowers and plants quality or unusually large plants or something like that..but then it would be hard because I could have just bought something that someone else grew and won. How would the judges know if I grew it and made all those amazing differences myself ? Should that not matter ? I think it should, for it to mean anything at all. Or not ? hehe I'm rambling.

Actually Anton, I think that by posting you actually did go there. But anyway.....I probably should have said "Size is only 10%" as in the AOS judging system only 10 of the total 100-point judges score is given for flower size.

I think tom499's suggestion is a good one. Most of us are novices. And many are just hobbyists. It will be an added incentive to show some good specimens which may or may not conform to professional standards.

BTW, all other factors being equal, size DOES matter, I think. I mean temperature , humidity, aeraton and so on and so forth

In answer to the new Competition idea it sounds all good and well but if a Novice does have a large single flower you can enter that into the Novice catogory of the photo comp.

I also agree with Kmarch that the size of a flower is not the winning factor.

If you do have a large flower count on a single or multi spikes then you may enter that into the Floral Art Display Comp.

Just to be a wet blanket, I personally think we are covered enough in the photo comps, because all of the features Tom mentioned are taken into account by Da Secret Judges anyway, whoever they be. (I wonder who Fred chose for this month,..... not me)

Don't want to make this Forum a really competative one, brings in inherant problems, been there, done that, that's why I like it the way it is, just a good mix of everything.

My 2 sepals worth.

Its just meant to be a bit of fun

most of us arent pro growers who enter real comps and grow winning flowers. A competition for things like the tallest flower spike or the largest leaf mean that anyone can enter.

There isnt a major incentive to win so I doubt people will go out to buy plants to win the com set.

Tom you seem to be missing the point the comp we have now is for all the members its meant to be a fun comp that is why we have the novice catogory for the comp.
Up untill I won the award for this month I was entered in the novice catogory to better myself I moved up a catogory.

If you want to go up against the so called pro,s then one would enter in the open catogory

yes but not all of us can grow plants for comps. I certainly dont have any plants of that level.

Having a comp for those thing would give a fairer chance to anyone.

That comp is also more about photography skills. This other comp works simply by proving measurements and such and wouldnt be judged on background, focal length and light etc.
