I was disappointed with the delay..

All good fred. I know a number of members were developing withdrawal symptoms but now they can get their fix.

Have we lost any "new posts list" info or anything with the move?

Yeah, Dan was right... I was severely afflicted with withdrawals... I tried not to pester him too much on Facebook

Boy is it nice to have you all back, you do a brilliant job fred, and I appreciate it massively. I may not have been taking part a lot in OG this year, but that doesn't mean I haven't been dropping in regularly to see how you've all been and what's flowering

No worries Fred! Thanks for administering the site as always. I was more concerned, not upset.

BTW, mind if I issue a "thanks" to a couple other forums that were good hosts to the geeks while OG was down? Lots of good folks on those other sites too.

Fred, I'll take the "Like" as a "yes".

Many of the geeks met and talked on other forums while OG was down. In particular, I'd like to thank members of the Orchid Board and RV Orchidworks for being good hosts and welcoming to the geeks! Thanks guys! Orchidgeeks is my "home" orchid community on the web, and always will be, but I will keep in touch with new friends on the other sites as well.

I am going to get on my soapbox for a moment
deep breath here I go..
I have seen a thread on one of the other forums and I am ticked right of that some geeks seem to think I we have tough rules and also having a shot at my moderators
the rules are set by me the moderators will follow the rules to the letter.
non of the moderators get paid all the time and effort the mods put in is all voluntary
if anyone has a problem with any of the moderators I expect that person to contact me
if a geek disagrees with a moderator again I expect that person to contact me and not use another forum to air what goes on here between a member and a moderator.
if anyone gets banned here on geeks I am also notified about the ban and the reason as to why..

we are here because of orchids I think we are a caring kind bunch of geeks and I think that's awesome I have also been on the receiving end of such caring, kind and thoughtful geeks I am quite proud of orckidgeeks and its members its a shame some geeks don't feel the same way..

ok 1 big step down off my soapbox thanks for reading

I love the geeks, I am here to learn because of my location. There are no orchid societies closer than Lansing Michigan. That is 5 hours from me, I live on an island which adds to the logistics.

I support www.orchidgeeks.com financially because you are my access to learning about orchids. The Moderators are experts in growing orchids to their full potential. They give their time to studying and learning and advice is free. What more could you ask?

I would be so disappointed if I could not come here to my computer and ask for help and advice with problems.

Thank you Fred and all the Moderators who give time and advice and mentoring to all members and guests.

glad its back!

Happy to see the geeks site is back!
I did go to orchidboard for awhile trying to find the other geeks, glad I found some there too.

Thanks Fred! Oh btw, I do not know if it is just my connection, or it is an adjustment to be tweaked with the new server..if I log on using google chrome I cannot connect, but if I log on using my Internet explorer the site loads easily.

Have a nice day everyone!

Please let me add my name to the list of happy geeks who are glad to be back "home". I thought I was having computer/router issues again, so I was glad to find geeks on other sites and learn that I was not the only one locked out!

SO nice to have this site back again!

Yay!!

We're back, ya'll, we're back!!

Thank you Fred, we appreciate you keeping this forum going. No worries about the outage...it happens.

I lurked on another site while OG was down and "saw" other Geeks there. It was heartwarming - and a relief- to see that others were missing OG as much as I was.

I was going through withdrawals!!

Great to be able to come back "home." The other forums are okay, but as Shledon Cooper from Big Bang Theory says, "This is my spot."

Fred, I am also having issues loading from Google Chrome. IE and Safari are good, but i use Chrome from my computer.

I don't understand what rules people are complaining about. I think this is a really great forum and I am really glad that it is here. Besides, why do people complain about rules? Gee. Thanks, Fred, for seeing that this site is once more a place for us all to meet.

I've got a couple suggestions for handling outages in the future. You may already have this covered, so I apologize if this sounds redundant.

1) Add a new thread to alert users ahead of time whenever there are planned updates, outages. That way, we know in advance that the site may be down.

2) Set-up a Twitter account for the site and tweet about planned outages and provide some status updates when things are down longer than expected.

3) Create an outage page on a separate server with status & information updates. It could be as simple as a static HTML page with a message stating that the site will be down on a given day and/or information that the planned updates are taking longer than anticipated.

When I noticed that the site was down, I didn't think much of it, sites go down, no big deal. But after a couple of days, I started searching for information, and I didn't see any search results with information. A cached page with info about the planned outage, a tweet and/or a static outage page would have shown up in the search results, and I would have known what was going on.

I started to think that either I'd been "permabanned" for some reason or that perhaps the site was taken offline for good. It wasn't until several days later that I found a thread on another site when I realized it wasn't just me having issues and that there had been a planned update that was taking longer than expected.

Obviously I'm not demanding that OG takes measures to inform users, it's a free site, you get what you pay for. But for a few days, I was concerned and in the dark. I like this place and I was very concerned that I had done something wrong and got banned or that the site was being shut down. A little information would have gone a long way.

All good suggestions. If you have any questions about setting any of these suggestions up, we may have some nerds among the Geeks

P.S. Tapatalk is sooo slow & Chrome is almost as bad. Not sure about IE or FF, haven't tried them yet.

Since geeks came back I've had a bit of trouble loading it on Safari on my Mac, and the page wouldn't load at all, but now it seems to be coming in and out... I hadn't noticed just how much I loved geeks, but I simply adore it, and thank you everyone for making it such a great place. I've tried a couple of other forums and didn't find them anywhere near as welcoming as geeks, and I just reckon, there's no place like home

I have a third generation iPad, using the latest version of Tapatalk. Since the OG's upgrade, the only threads that I noticed clocking seem to be the ones that have large files, or threads I had not previously read.

Regarding the OG down time. I don't know why I got on a notification email list, but I am and I thank you for sending it to me. This email stopped me from pursuing the process of trying to figure out why I could not get onto OG...was it a problem with my iPad's connection? Was it a problem with the Tapatalk app--ironically Tapatalk was also updating their app, right around the time this was happening on OG. I was going to pursue the problem further but then I got the email from you all that told me it wasn't my side of the technology.

Alls well that ends well!

Same here. Safari on Mac OS 10.6.8.

I find if I click stop and then reload the page will usually load, but I have to do it for almost every page.

Same issue occurs in Chrome on a Vista/vmware session I use at work.

Also, regarding the infection issue, I find that many pages here when accessed via a google search link redirect to a third-party file upload site. If hit the back button and click on the same google link again, the correct page loads. This problem existed before the server move and is usually the result of a php injection compromise in a site.

Looks like maybe the page loading issue is fixed. All pages have been loading almost instantaneously since Wednesday.

Looking back over this thread, I see MattWoelfsen has referred to an e-mail notification list. What is this list and how does one get on it? I had to go on another forum and find a thread about this board to get the story, and I didn't think to do that for several days.

Anybody know about this?

I just realized how I got on this mailing list. I signed up for it when I first joined Orchid Geeks. At least once a month I get an email about some subject on gardening. The email provides an interesting tidbit and if I wanted more detail of the subject matter, it gives me a link that will take me to the reference.

Unfortunately I do not remember how I signed up for it. Maybe an admin or moderator can advise?

Wow! Thanks, Matt. I sure don't remember seeing anything like that when I joined, but it was a while back. Maybe there is a way to get on the list now? Fred, can you help?

I also received an email notifying me of the downtime. It was such a nice courtesy and I really appreciated it!

Never knew this existed, either. Is it somewhere under the User CP?

I'm not sure but it might be under the email notification/subscription area.

If you go into User CP...
click on Edit Options (under Settings and Options category)...
there you will see a Default Thread Subscription Mode...that's the only thing I can find that sounds like it might be it.

I have mine set to no emails because I got tired of all the messages coming into my inbox. I don't know if this is the right area but it's the only thing I can see. ????????? Maybe Fred will see this and have more info. ????????

Oh,wow. Didn't even know OG was down Where I am moving too I don't have internet

I joined to learn how to grow orchids. Then when OG like brooke, synda, fred, etc showed award winning orchids I got bit by the show bug Have stepped out of my comfort zone and tried more challenging orchids. I'm also a moderator on a couple of trucking forms. It is a volunteer position. The mods are here to make sure the rules are followed and too keep the peace.

OG is a special bunch. We not only share the love for orchids but we also share the laughter, happiness, sadness and tears.

I did some browsing in the Users CP and found that default subscription setting, but I thought that was only a subscription when you post on a thread. Like katrina, I didn't want so many e-mails when I browse mostly everyday anyway. But I also have checked the "accept e-mails from administration", which clearly didn't get me the crucial e-mail.

It remains a mystery.

I wish I could report that. I download a thread and then go get a cup of coffee. It's like having dial-up internet service again.

Are we good now? Orchid Geeks was down all weekend, or more accurately all attempts to access the site resulted in the actual PHP code of the page being downloaded as a file. Other users reported this same behaviour, per a thread over at OB.

Nice to be back on-line! Let's hope it lasts for a while. I've been traveling and it's hard to come home and not have my geeky site.
