Species Project Arrival Photos

I thought it might be easier to have everyone post their project photos on a "clean thread"? I know that Sandra has some ideas on getting this project off and running in a slightly different format but this might give us a place to compare original pics until it is ready to go?
Here are my two plants as they arrived last Friday. Phal has three leaves and paph has one small new fan just starting besides the original.
My intent will be to repot the phal into my coir mix and leave the paph in bark.

Mike, in the alternative, I agree with you, this is a good idea. Bummer that the project's been stalled in getting the sub-forums up and running. Fred is out of town, he should be back soon.

Here is my arrival photo. Not all are in the project, some are just 'I have to have thats.' I am re-potting and mounting today and will do another picture with just the 'participants.'

I have a nice, rainy day to stay in cooking and potting.

The first picture was taken after I received my Oak Hill order on 03/12/2008 (before the species project was announced). The second picture was taken today 04/03/2008.

You lucky people.

I'm still trying to track them down in the UK - the orchid nurseries that have them showing on the web, DON'T have them in stock, that's so annoying.

Watch this space, I WILL get there in the end. In the meantime I'll enjoy looking at yours.

Connie I love your orchid buying philosophy.

Here's mine... The Koellenstinea graminea came in great shape, well potted and all meticulously packed, but my Phal amboinensis came with one leaf flopped over the wrong way. It's not broken, but I assume it got that way from the stress of transit. I intend to repot in Mike's coir mix and if I position it just right in the pot, I'm hoping it will relax back into shape. What do you think?

Give it a chance to relax. It should return to normal. The hybrid Phal I got from Jerry, the leaves were like that. After setting for awhile they relaxed. I repotted into Aussie Mix, similar to Mike's stuff. Good stuff.

I've taken a few pics of my project plant when it arrived yesterday, but won't post until this weekend, or early next week.

I swear. Those Kollensteinia graminea all look identical. Wait 'til you see mine.

So far it looks to me like the little phals are not exactly the same - mine only has three leaves and I see some here with 4 and 5. Hmmm. Now I guess I'll have to see if I can catch up! Actually, my initial goal is to just keep it alive!

Mike - I noticed that as well but believe we will be fine. I would bet they are all darn close to the same 'age' even with different amounts of leaves. I use my Vanda seedlings that I just deflasked. All 3 are different sizes with different leaf counts but they all came out of the same flask.

It is common when you receive a phal in the mail for a leaf to be too upright or bent in the wrong direction. To reorient the leaf, use masking tape on the tip of the leaf and tape it to the container. Within a short period of time the leaf will be in the normal position. The masking tape will pull off the leaf and do no damage.

Mine is one that has 5 leaves, but I do believe that after my newest leaf is done growing, that it'll drop one or both of the teeny tiny leaves. And I do mean teeny tiny

My project orchids: Phal ambionensis, and Paph spicerianum
Also bought a Paph hainanense (2" pot) - not pictured (very tiny).

The Phal has four leaves, although the bottom one you can't see is quite tiny and a bit yellow - will probably fall off. I will probably repot this in the coir mix.

The Paph has a new pup coming up in the foreground. I'll keep this one in bark - at least for now.

I know there is the one at Tatton Park coming up in June and there are going to be growers from the Philipines there + all the major UK growers

My order from Oak Hill arrived this week; today is my first chance to post pictures. You'll see pictures of the shipment as I received it, as well as various stages of undress. I ordered Phal amboinensis as my project plant, along with two other Phals. While the mountain of styrofoam peanuts made me cringe, each plant was carefully packed and a heatpack was included.

My Phal amboinensis has four leaves, the largest being 3 3/4" from tip to crown. I have not done any repotting yet. Although the medium looks new there are a lot of pieces much smaller than I expected and I worry that the bark will stay wetter than I like. After reading some good reviews on other threads, I may try a mix from repotme.com.

Thanks very much to Oak Hilll for their part in this project and again to Sandra for all of her efforts.

Wow! What a mount! Are all of your 'chids on that log?! I can hardly believe you have that huge thing indoors.

What type of tree log are you using?

Yeah arleneg, all 17 of them are on there I have room for about thirty total if many of them are small or miniature. The "log" is 4 feet wide and about 7 inches in diameter. It is cedar. Of course I could fit an infinite number of teeny orchids on there. And I havent even started with terrestrials yet

I finally got pics of mine! Yay. My camera has been giving me fits and I'm about to toss it out the window

I got my OakHill babies on Friday. Getting orchids two days in a row was like heaven I opened the box and everything was packed perfect. I never seen pink packing peanuts before, (I know, I'm naive and deprived. ) I thought it was cool. When I unwrapped the Koellensteinia graminea it was in bloom with several buds! Woohoo! The Phal amboinensis has 4 leaves (it did have 5, but I think the stress of traveling took a toll on the lowest bottom leaf. Funny, cause it was a tiny one too. I'm really watching it and going to notify OakHill about it.

I don't know what I'm going to do with the mix or potting. I haven't decided yet. I think I'm going to leave it alone for now, since they are both in a mix of what looks like bark with dynarock.

That's a very impressive mounting you're doing made4engineering. What is the plant on the far right in the photo? and also the one with the large root mass? How do you water them all to their needs? Very, very nice!

Jenny, those look great. I don't think you have to worry about the bottom leaf but probably a good idea like you've said to let Oak Hill know...just in case it starts failing (but it won't!)

Also, just in case...because the packing peanuts are pink, I think it's not a good idea to save them for future pottings. The dye can have adverse effects, so I've been told and it makes sense.

Make sure the peanuts are not the kind that are biodegradable and dissolve in water!

Will not use pink peanuts, but they do look neat! I did let Oak hil know about the leaf, haven't heard from them yet, but I'm not really worried about it, they look awesome!!!

Perhaps they are the edible kind of packing peanuts! (a little dye wont hurt you )
And Sandra, that gigantic root mass belongs to a Gongora. It must be happy because it will be four spikes this spring All plants get the same water... I just posted new pics of my plants in the growing list section. Take a look!

I took a look that kept me fixed a good 5 minutes m4e. I tried posting there but it says I "don't have permission to access this page." (It's just a temporary glitch in the system, have seen this happen before.) That mounting project is outrageous, not just because it's huge but you've done a beautiful job, aesthetically.

I forgot to ask in my previous thread:

Is there a general roster of participants and what they are growing on any thread?

It would be helpful to me to keep me on track with the others growing the same plants and to exchange info .
I am really busy with moving and at work (and of course wrangling the 100's "Horr-chids" that moved also. I haven't had a chance to catch up here yet. Thanks
