Congratulations Sharyn from me too!! I also had a great talk with the folks at Oak Hills. I told them that I was a first time customer and that I was ordering for the Orchidgeeks project. I told them that so many of you had sung their praises. They were quite happy to hear that! I'm looking forward to receiving my plants too!

Well just to make sure, I am ordering any or multiples of the 4 or 5 listed in the very first post of this thread? I will probably only order one even if that is the case, but it will be the KOELLENSTEINIA graminea if I have a choice, if not will someone please point me in the right direction on the winner? TIA!

Rpfeiffer, all the information is in the very first post in this thread. Look under Members Choices for the plants picked for the project. Any or all can be chosen for the project.

RPfeiffer - I believe the first choice for the project is Phal amboinensis. However, several members are getting the others to compare as well since Oak Hill is offering all of them at the discounted rate for the Geeks.

This project is running away. Great job Sandra, Fred and all involved helping start this incredible learning experience.

Please count me in for the project. My husband is going to kill me if he finds out that I ordered another orchid, but I ordered the Phal amboinensis.

I called today and added a Mini Mark 'Holm' and a Phal (Fortune Buddah x Brother Pumpkin) to my order. I said to the guy "we must be driving you crazy." He said yeah, but that's okay.
They didn't ship anything today so we will probably have to wait until next week. Bummer!!! It's a lot more fun when ordering orchids for a purpose.

I think my collection is getting to a size that it might be possible to sneak a smaller one in without notice. Not sure though.

The key is to keep them in constant motion, inside, outside, different rooms.......

I see. But I have all of my orchids in one spot on a shelf system so sneaking them in is a little more difficult.

I totally agree with PhalPhal! I just rearranged the atrium and my youngest asked how many new plants I got. I told him the truth... none.
Once your collection is big enough, another new one doesn't even get noticed!

Jay,

Hide the new one behind a bigger one and slowly move it to where you want it to be.

The other day my husband asked me how many orchids I had and I answered honestly, "I don't know, really don't care." He proceeded to COUNT them....booger.....(at least those under lights) and made sure to tell me THAT number did not include the blooming Phals in the kitchen window OR the "numerous" Cyms, Oncs, Sobralia and Catts outdoors.

I don't think he is devious enough to have counted ALL of them, but he may be catching on to my deceptions/diversions. I quickly rebutted by pointing out how much SPACE I still have to add more. I mean, the orchids I have under lights have lots of elbow room!! Not to even mention they have a room to themselves and two more walls to put more light stands. At this point he is an innocent; he has NO idea how bad this can get!

Jay: This forum is all about helping each other. Just let us "HELP" you. We have our WAYS of sneaking in new orchids! You did not come to this forum to be dis-swayed. We are all "enablers." We cannot help oursevels. We ARE addicted. There's always room for one more orchid. :laugh

I ordered my orchid project plant, and then some...................... Maybe I'll have to kick out the dog, but I'll find room for the new 'chids.

I am sorry to say I have to bow out of this project for now. The transmission on my van went and it means a $3000.00 bill, so no new orchids for me for a while(unless I have nice friends that see fit to give them to me)(just kidding). So maybe the next orchid project things will be better for me to try .Flowerchild aka Cindy

Hello Sandra,

I've ordered the Phalaenopsi amboinensis and the Aspasia lunata, but I'm not sure that I'm part of the project. If not please count me in.

By the way, those of us west of the Sierras are having to wait until it's safe to ship

However, I do get caught when hubby decides to work at home on a day when a package arrives. When he comments "Another one?!", I respond "It's been awhile since I ordered one."

Arlene I got 'caught' a few weeks ago when my husband was home sick with a cold (he NEVER gets sick!) and a box came with two mini-Catts that I had ordered SIX weeks earlier! What timing! Thank goodness it was the box with only TWO orchids in it and not the one coming from Oak Hills with SIX.

oops!

I hope only I know about the orchids coming in. However he is very observant and is ALWAYS asking what is in bloom. I should be happy he is interrested but he ALWAYS says I have ENOUGH. How do you define enough of a good thing?

I joke a lot about my husband and that he keeps track of every little plant, but he could not be more supportive of my little passion. However, as cheap as he is, he would cringe if he really knew what some of these plants cost!

I keep reminding him about some of my friends that spend thousands on jewelry and shoes. He gets quiet in a hurry; it could be much worse.

It is a healthy addiction. I'm surrounded by a lot of bad health here and whenever the stress feels 'too much', I find myself putting a lot of energy into the orchids. The more I've got, the more time I spend doing something positive. It works.

I agree Sandra and Vivienne. I just love puttering around my gardens and messing with my orchids inside and out. I don't have a care in the world or ugly thoughts on my mind when I'm in their world.

I know some of you have received these, but I don't think I have seen too many photos of the plants.

My order was charged on monday as well, so I am hoping for tomorrow. UPS ground had an estimated delivery of Wednesday for my area, if it was shipped on Monday.

Bummer.
Other people's cards are getting charged. Others are getting new 'chids. Not me. But am I jealous? Well... maybe, yeah. Actually, I'm green with envy.
But my orchids won't ship. It's still below freezing every night in the Sierras and they don't move till trucks can get through without killing cargo. I'm going to find out how much more it will cost to get mine air lifted over the frozen tundra. Wish me luck.

Just got home from work and found my package from oak Hill. Yeaa!! It is only in the
upper 30 F here, so I was a little concerned. It was packaged very well and to my
surprise it had 2 inflorescences with 2 buds on 1 and 3 on the other that were opening
up. Leaves looked good. 2 new growths and the roots were very healthy. I put it in
the east window of my room. Here is a quick pic that I took.

Picking mine up this week.

I'm still a little lost. Does anyone know what we are doing with them

Should we measure them? Take photos? Describe our conditions? Will there be a spreadsheet? How long will the contest last? If the plants are in bud, how will that affect what we are doing? Are we reporting weekly? Monthly?

I. GOT. MY. ORCHIDS. TODAY.

Kefersteinia is large with many growths.
Phal amboinesis is as expected (pictured below).
My Rhynchostylis coelestis has 2 large fans!
Chiloschista is an even tinier plant than I thought... and it's in bud!

I will post good pictures of these when I mount them and then borrow someone's digital camera. I wont torture anyone with anymore crappy webcam pics like this...

Mine came today too! I got:
Phal amboinensis which I will mount since the one I have is in a pot,
Paph spicerianum (my first Paph!!)
Encyclia bractescens, really cute with four little buds on it, AND
Mini Mark 'Holm' AND
Phal Fortune Buddah, which has what I think is frost damage on the three largest leaves. I called Oak Hill and they are giving me a refund. I don't know if this one will make it; I have never dealt with frost damage before. Any suggestions???

I'm trying to post a picture but no matter what I do it's too large! AARRRGGH! Anybody else having this problem?? I reduced it to 600 x 450; this has always worked in the past!!!??

Engineers are ALL alike!! I can say that because I married one and I'm surrounded by them!

Only an engineer will go to Yosemite and remember the obscure equation to determine the height of a waterfall by estimating the amount of time it takes an object to fall to the ground from the top of said waterfall.

Did you know that Bridalveil Falls is exactly 620 feet tall???

Now, me being the more efficient and somewhat brighter of the group simply read the SIGN, but I must admit I was impressed that he and his brother (yes, another engineer) estimated the height within three feet. Lucky guess.

Connie, I have been having the same problems, I cannot post from Photobucket into attachments, and all the pics are way too big from the computer (according to the attachment thingy). That's why all you got was a mug shot of Bob the other day, cause I am tired of having to post giant pics.

oh! I hope mine comes today!!! Yesterday the UPS truck went down our street, and sadly passed our house. I just hope that UPS gets the right house this time, last two times they delivered my packages to my next door neighbor, and delivered her packages to me.
