| Oak Hill (New & Improved) Plant List
For those who have not read my last couple of posts in the Oak Hill Gardens Supply List thread, please note that the original list of plants we were choosing from, turned out not to satisfy all requirements for the project, including guaranteed prices, guaranteed number of plants for the project and overall, choices. The following list is guaranteed by Oak Hill. They have enough plants to satisfy all, individual orders. One objective in the selection was to keep the costs down for all members. Oak Hill has offered us a 25% discount on plants priced at $16.00 or higher, therefore, any plant costing $16.00, will cost no more than $25.00 with the shipping and handling ($12.50 s/h), but a plant costing $15.95 and lower, will be regular price. A little ahead of myself here and will remind everyone after the poll is taken, that those members doing the ordering over the internet, will be charged the full price as they're entering all their credit information and will have the discounted price applied (providing the plant chosen is $16.00 or higher) before the plant is shipped. There will be room in the ordering section for 'comments' and it's there you should note to Oak Hill that this was for the growing project on OrchidGeeks. Hopefully all members can select and note their choices by this Friday. Again, please choose up to 3 plants from the following list and post your choices here, in this thread! We are on the right track now! I know a few members have expressed that they'll be happy with whatever everyone else chooses and the final decision. That's how all members who vote, will happily feel BUT come on folks, get in the spirit a little and put your 3 petals worth in and cast your votes. Afterall, this is an election year. ************************************************** ******************* Need some assistance in your search, outside the U.S.? | Don't know the answer to that Nancy but I'll be ordering more than one also. I have my eye on a couple that I'll order at the same time as this. I would think shipping charges would increase. There's a link on their site to contact them. If you do contact them, let us know what they reply!

Oak Hill charges shipping by the dollar amount spent. I got 9 plants and spent approx. $15.00 for shipping. Sandra, for the hybrid project post I cannot reply to the thread, says that I am not allowed. Is anyone seeing this?

I tried replying to the thread and also and got the same thing.

I can't get there either. Jerry may have posted under some Moderator admissions that keep the rest of us out of there. I also have had great difficulty responding to the species thread listed here and manuerving the forum. Perhaps a few kinks in the system today. |
| ||||
|
I tried to post for the hybrid project and it wouldn't let me either. I'm glad it's not just me. I'm looking forward to both projects. This is gonna be so cool.

Last night I couldn't even access the forum. I got messages that indicated there was a database error. Fred and/or Dave must have sorted out the problem though because I have surfed around th site today without difficulty. Hopefully you won't have any problems posting today.

Might have to get one of these with the project plant. Geez, only $6 right? It's not going to break me....(That is if I only stop there.

Sandra, I'm so far behind, again. Man, doesn't anybody else work around here? It seems like if I work and come home and check OrchidGeeks, I resurface around 9:30, no dinner, clothes not changed yet. Oh well, better than other choices. I have already made the hybrid choices, not easy! Now, am I supposed to make the species choices also. So sorry, everyone, I really am trying to keep up. I think, if I have a choice, I should stick with Jerry's selection of hybrids. Same area, same weather, etc... Here are my selections from this post: Dend chrysanthum Eria bractescens Kefersteinea telimensis |

It's early in the poll....I don't like what I'm seeing....my heart is sinking.....I don't want the Paph. to win..... ![]() Isn't this one interesting? ASPASIA lunata Oak Hill Gardens |

I already have a paph spicerianum myself - for those worrying about space - it is a small plant. I have had mine in a five inch pot for 2-3 years and it is still not too big. Maybe a second choice for those who would prefer an alternative? I thought maybe you would take the top five vote getters on the list and then have us all vote from that more concise list - two round system? Or something like this? The purpose not to give yourself another chance at getting what you want, but giving those who had totally other choices a chance at selecting something which would be more of their choosing. If I selected three choices and none of them were the top vote getter, there still might be a fourth choice that I would prefer from the top five that is more to my liking than the top vote getter overall from the original pick-3 option. Just some thoughts - Sandra - feel free to ignore this post if it just muddies the water. It has been an interesting process to even watch the evolution of this thread........

Maybe it would take a huge amount of time to get there, but this site says they get pretty big (big for my space anyways!) Paphiopedilum spicerianum |
| ||||
|
Maybe I'm just lucky with mine? Anyway - sorry Sandra - didn't notice that you already had the final poll going - this multiple thread thing can really be confusing. |

Unfortunately I'm with Sandra... I already have 20 or so Paphs. I was really hoping for the Aerangis but that's not looking too good. Maybe I'll get the Aerangis anyways and do my own project. LOL We'll just have to see what happens in the end.

I like Mike's idea of having a two round choice process. We could all cast a second vote from the top three or four choices (or at least clear winners) of this poll. It will be impossible to choose a plant that someone doesn't have, doesn't want or can't accommodate. It will then be each person's choice to partcipate or not? We can start another choice process in six months or so, getting a very different plant from this first session that would appeal to some who didn't get their choice this time around. made4engineering: I do. made4engineering: I checked out your site; you do realize those measurements are in centimeters and not inches?? (2.5 cm = 1 inch)

I'm with Connie and Mike. There are so many choices, it spreads the vote out, so a second round of the top 3 sounds good to me.

PhalPal: Engineers don't drive trains. I dont think I would have made it through 2 semesters of Physics and 3 semesters of Calculus without knowing what a centimeter was. I realised it was in centimeters when it gave the units "cm" following the number. The measurements are per leaf. Last edited by made4engineering; 03-22-2008 at 07:42 PM. |

can we please stick to the Topic here as there are so many orchids to chose from I think we need just to stick with the 2 list,s we have for the moment. Having said that lets see how Sandra wishes to take this if we keep changing our minds here the project may fail to get off the ground. |

Amen- Every time I get on thinking I can finally order my plant(s) the rules are changing. Go with the poll- If people don't like what's chosen, they can always drop out. From the beginning it was stated that not everyone would be happy. I'm not really crazy about the top choices- but that isn't what this is about. I'll probably order one that I really like a lot as well.

| Wellllllllll, that's not entirely true patticake. Read the "poll" thread in this forum, it's explained there.
|

Forgive me. It's cold and nasty here and I've got a crummy cold. I am going to be happy to grow any of the plants. I'm not usually crabby. The plant I liked most(bloom-wise) was the Dend. chrysantum. When I looked into it more, I saw that it grows 5-9 ft.! I love that bloom, but, that would REALLY be a big plant eventually. I will be happy with whatever is decided and I truly mean that!!!

Fred I don't think anyone is changing their mind or Sandra's system. She has put in a great deal of time and effort and has done a great job, but as with anything there is a big learning curve the first time we go through this process. However, if we have 30 people voting on ten choices there will be no clear winner, so narrowing the choices down to a few for a final vote isn't such a bad idea. Take your time Sandra; we'll get there!!! ![]() BTW: I'm married to an Engineer and have taken a few Physics classes myself. Few Americans know the metric system so it wasnt a huge assumption to think you may be one of them.

Kevin - WHO in the American government decided to make the $1 coin the same size as a quarter???? I want to know who this idiot is! I'm thinking if a plant wins that I already have I will just grow it a different way, i.e. mounted versus potted, different medium, etc. and......I wondered when the campaigning was going to start! This is only because it had occurred to me to announce my endorsement of Encyclia bractescens to FOX news and beg them for air time.
