I LOVE my Naples Nights orchids. They're so pretty even when they're out of bloom. I had double flower spikes on one of my plants but I managed to rot off (damned sphagnum moss!) all the roots before very many of the blooms had opened. I've lost 4 leaves on that plant in the last month. It was sooooo sad to have to cut off those two spikes! The flowers are gorgeous and the branching of the spikes is really wonderful. You'll love it too, I'm sure!

I have been doing a little rearranging to make room for ? more orchids! I moved the Naples Nights to the kitchen window, east facing. I think it might grow a bit faster with more light. Keeping my fingers crossed, I want a flower spike, I want a flower spike!

Well, I was watering today and my Naples Nights pot felt a little heavy and the leaves seemed a little droopy, so I dumped it out and found that it was still too wet. I was worried about the roots rotting so I repotted it and put some styrofoam in the bottom with the shultz mix, and potted it a little higher than it was. I got rid of all that sphagum moss, do not like it! The plant looks better, now. I will post some pictures this afternoon.

April: My phal was also in spagham moss. I must say that it was the nicest moss I've seen, however, like you, I don't do very well with the moss in my growing conditions. Repotted mine in a coir mix and it's doing well. I'm sure that yours will be fine too, especially if you're timid with the moss. Do what's comfortable for you and your conditions. I must admit that the leaves are exceptionally pretty with the purple underneath and the mottled spots on the leaves. I'm anxious to see one of our members get a spike and some pretty rewards! |

Mine has a nub, also- It's a tiny bump just above the bottom leaf. I'll try to get a pic. of mine tomorrow. It's so little, - I'll try using my close-up lens system.

it had some problems with leaves being limp, so I repotted, with no change. On Sunday, 5/4 I got some worm tea, soaked the roots in it and then repotted to the smaller pot. Today I noticed some green roots and what might be a stub of something. I will take a picture later tonight and try and get posted. I am hopeful that it is coming around.

Well, I am not sure about my Naples Nights. It still looks pretty sad. I took a look at the roots, they are small but I do have some fat green ones. The leaves are very limp. ![]() I got a brick of coir and rehydrated some of it and repotted (again!) the Phal. I will leave it alone and see if it will come around. I fixed up a bottle of worm tea and I will mist in the morning. Send happy orchid thoughts my way!!!

Thank you all for the happy thoughts, I am sure that my Naples Nights is feeling them I need to try and leave the Phal alone, trying to be a good orchid mom, I am probably doing too much to it! I will take a picture tonight and then monitor with pictures every couple of days. Thanks again!

My Naples Night from Jerry just got repotted. It is growing nicely. I left the moss around it and put it in one size pot larger(clay) with hydroton rock around it. I've done this with some of my other phals and they seem to like it. NancyG |

??? Nancy, if I understand you correctly you have the Phal planted in moss in a pot that is placed in another pot surrounded with hydroton? Right? Do you have pics so I can see?

A picture would be good! I think she's saying that the hydroton is right against the sphag. around the perimeter, all inside the one pot. This would eliminate too much sogginess from the sphag, I would assume. Sounds interesting!

Yes a pic would be nice. I'd have to see to understand.

When I get a chance I'll send a pic but it is like Patticake says. The original plant with the sphag around the roots in a slightly larger clay pot with the hydroton rock at the bottom and sides and some on top (surrounded). It is outside in filtered light in the morning. It is starting to get hot down here so it dries out pretty fast. It gets misted or watered as needed. NancyG |
