Mike's Intermedia Super Babies

You'll never guess what I got today!
Something else to "throw into the mix"!
Eleven Intermedia 4N just recently deflasked babies! The fact that they are 4N will be super interesting - hopefully to others besides me?! Double the normal number of chromosomes. Reports are that this translates into "super" plants - faster growing, bigger, etc. Time will tell. They are starting out significantly behind to start with - lets see if they catch up?! The parents are both awarded plants - so there could be some real potential here - Phalaenopsis amabilis (aphrodite) v. formosana 'FANGtastic 4N' AM/AOS (white flowers) x Phalaenopsis equestris 'Riverbend' AM/AOS. One thing I've already noticed is that the leaves are very round (some folks like this characteristic in phals) and they are also very THICK - especially for flasklings - quite unlike my first deflasked baby phals.

It will be interesting to see how these develop. Who deflasked them? Please put me on the list when you get tired of tending all of them.

I got a amboinensis 4N from Norman and it too has really thick leaves BUT the flowers and leaves are much smaller than my normal ambo flowers/leaves. They grow right next to one of my ambo so I know it is receiving the same light so it isn't a light difference.

Those look great for just being deflasked, can't wait to see how they grow.

Brooke - place in Ohio called Angel Orchids. I'll definately keep you in mind and check/see if you are still interested. Awhile back I purchased a Phal. aphrodite 4N (subsp. formosana, babuyan) that is quite interesting - may be one of the parents of these guys - also very thick leaves and a huge vigorous grower. I'm looking forward to seeing it bloom this winter.

-K- LOL. Maybe they can protect my other phals from their #1 enemy too? Mealy Bugs! Grrrr.

I run into Angel Orchids at some of the shows around here.

OK I have it in writing - LMK when you get tired of tending all those seedlings and I will relieve some of your work load

Cool!
An extra set of chromosomes to fall back on if the first one breaks! Ill be curious to see what the difference is.

If you ever get sick of them, ill be there for you.

I purchased 10 plants and received an extra. A few months ago one of them died - still thankfully have the 10 I paid for. They have not grown tons - but are doing well......

Very healthy babies. I see tiny new leaves on most of them. And as usual, a couple are giants.

4Ns really are bigger and more vigorous. I had a 4N Bc Makai that had bigger leaves *and* flowers than an awarded regular Makai. It was a very noticeable difference. Also grew faster. Actually 4Ns get a double dose of good traits and a double dose of the bad as well.

This is a great experiment. Keep us posted.
