Phalaenopsis amboinensis

This is my first phal specie purchase What is the best culture for this little guy Right now I have it sitting with the rest of my phals. I can't wait to see it bloom. From what I was told it should be blooming in about 6 months.

We're fortunate to have some really good phal growers here on the site and we have several members who grow this species. Someone should come along soon with some useful advice.

It doesn't require anything special to flower it. If you can grow a "regular" phal, you can grow and flower the ambo too.

I don't know about the claim it should flower in about six months. I have one that starts blooming in early winter, I have one that started late fall, then rested and is now blooming again. I have another seedling that started a spike mid-winter but it is just sitting there doing nothing now.

From my experience I can't fit this species into any season - they are slow to grow and seem to have a mind of their own.

Brooke

After having my first one for (from a seedling) going on nearly two years I can definately second Brooke's comment about "SLOW GROWING". You almost need to take a before and after picture about every six months to confirm that it actually has changed! Mine has not bloomed yet, but I'm hoping sometime in this next year that it will - time will tell.........

Possessing neither pseudobulbs nor rhizome,Phalaenopsis shows a monopodial growth habit: an erect growing stem produces one or two alternate, thick, fleshy, elliptical leaves a year from the top while the older, basal leaves drop off at the same rate.

I have one that is mounted on cork. It is a seedling, same age as Mike's probably, from Oak Hill. It is very slow growing. There is a growth that may be a spike, but it is too early to tell what it will be. It grows with all the other phals, and seems happy.

It looks healthy! It does appear to be a ways off from flowering, to me. Several of us got this plant from Oak Hill a couple of years ago as a project. Mine is still growing...slowly...no bloom yet, but as Mike says, I'm hoping this year!

Woo Hoooooooooooo I got some action on my ambeo One new root and a new leaf I can see another little nub but it's too early to tell

I had it potted in bark and I guess it wasn't happy with its bark and location. So I repotted in sphag and changed it's location and I've been rewarded

Looks healthy but seems a bit small to be ready for blooming in 6 months. but you never know, these things can surprise you now and then. Basic phal care should be perfect for your new little guy.
