PhalPal, It was a wise choice to use a translucent pot for your first paph. This way you will be able to see how moist the mix is under the surface. It should always stay slightly moist. Sometimes when I describe it to new paph growers I say they like to be a little damp. I also think the species project has chosen well for which species paph to grow. In my opinion, spicerianum is one of the more forgiving and vigorous species.

Thanks Kevin for the input. I added a little NZ bark to made my all around coir mix a little more moisture retentive. I'm loving the plastic pots and have nearly all my orchids in them now. It's fun to see little green root tips thru the plastic, let's me know everything is okay in there.

UPDATE - I have a bud!!!!! My first paph bud!! I have been sooo busy with our remodel/contractors in my house I haven't taken a picture yet but will when it opens shortly. I'm so excited! I also have FOUR catts blooming, a few of which are just gorgeous. I MUST get pictures because these are my first as well. That's what happens when I ignore my plants and don't HOVER quite so much. I'm too busy HOVERING over contractors! It's awful ladies, just awful having all these men in my house.....

My Paph. spicerianum is in spike also! I'll try to post an update and photo tomorrow night. (Fri) My life has been nuts trying to sell my house for over a year...Phalpal, I'm so excited!! Is your bud little? I'm used to bigger buds on Paphs, and this one is so little and cute!

BTW - my spicerianum is also in spike. First bloom for me and yes, mine seems teeny tiny compared to other paphs. I thought it was because my plant is so tiny.

Ahh sadness.....all the really cute ones left!! Cute or not, they sure can make a mess. Sorry no pics, I think that might be viewed as sexual harrassment. My Paph spice still has not opened. I am hoping this is normal and the bud is not going to blast. I haven't moved it one bit. The stem is getting longer and it looks like it will open at any time. The waiting is agony!! What do you think from the pics???? It has looked just like this for two days.

It doesn't look yellowed at all, I know that Paphs take a loooong time to open up! Patience

Paphs are very slow to open. But they are also slow to lose their bloom. They stay in bloom for quite a while.

So you're planning to feed it to the cat??? (just noticed the bowl that it was in.) Yours looks way better than mine.

Well my little Paph spice has opened! These pictures are lowsy and a bit blurry even though I used a tripod but you get the idea of how happy he is. I just today found a bud on another paph hybrid I have that I purchased in June while in bud. I'm thrilled that maybe he will be a twice a year bloomer!!! I have three paphs and two have budded/bloomed....I think I'm beginning to really like paphs now. ![]() I've named this Paph spice 'Jerry' for some reason. It's probably because when I see a paph I think of Kevin and his cat Gerald came to mind, so cheers to Gerald!!!! Horrors Patti! Don't even think such a thought! He was dripping a bit and that is the first thing I could grab, but don't go giving my kitties any ideas.....they don't need additional input to get into mischief. I put him in this little tea cup so he wouldn't fall over. It helps to give a bit of perspective as well because his pot is so small. I think he's adorable.
