I'm zone 3- I start tomatoes on St. Patricks day (3/17) impatients, and petunias I'll start this week- (geraniums, too) Most seed packs will tell you the first safe date to plant outside for your area. Ours is June 1st. They also say how long each kind of seed takes.-just figure back from that.

I think I'm going to start container grown tomatoes in a couple of weeks. Waited wa-a-ay too long last year and got caught in our summer rainy season. Plants and fruit rotted, of course, as did my bell pepper plants. Going to take another shot before I give up on farming.

What timing. I was just thinking this past weekend about starting some vegies by seed to give them a leg up, rather than planting seed in the ground. I have to do it outside though and the squirrels are likely going to be a problem. I thought of covering the trays with a fine mesh to keep them from digging.
