| native NY pitcherplants
I was going through some pics i had on my camera and rediscovered these. I took them at Beaver Lake Nature Center in Baldwinsvile, NY in Oct. While taking a break from the orchid show, my friends and I walked the trails and found clusters of pitcher plants. I believe that they are Northern purple pitcherplants although that may be incorrect. It's the only pitcherplant I could find that was native to NY. The final pic is of a spent flower that rose out of one of the clumps. It was hard to get pics because we werer in a bog in NY in Oct. I didn't want to take the chance of ending up wet an hour away from a change of clothes. Anyway, I hope you enjoy them. Now that I know where they are, I'm planning on going back a couple of times next year and see if I can catch them in full bloom.

I could but they are considered threatened here in NY. Better to leave them where they are.

Oh cool! My husband was sick, so I didn't want to keep him there any longer than I did for the show. I wish we had walked the trails! We'll have to go back again as I would love to see these babies in person!

Wow! A guy in our orchid society grows them on his front porch and leaves them outside all winter long and they grow back every spring!

I grew up in Indiana and thought Jack-in-pulpet was a beautiful, it was some time later that I learned that they were orchids. I love to see them still.

Patti, aren't those pitcher flowers cool! its like they have the structural complexity to match the pitchers. Dave. Jack-in -the-pulpits are also a really cool flower, however they are not orchids. They are a member of the Arisaemateae family. Arisaema triphyllum. |

| Easy to grow ...
Hi there! I am new here but wanted to tell you that Purple Pitcher Plants are super easy growers and you can obtain them easily! Check eBay and get in touch with a few of the growers there. I have numerous pitcher plants growing in a bog pond I built in my front yard .. yes, instead of water and koi in my pond, I have a pond of dirt and plants!! They winter over outside here in zone five with no problem and come back every year. But I do have a native orchid that popped up out of nowhere in that pond too and I don't know what it is! Peace ~ Ang

We hiked/drove thru northern Minnesota in early July - it was a very late spring this year and the ladyslippers and pitcher plants had just started to bloom. Bemidji State Park has a wonderful boardwalk thru the bog area (see the picture) and there are lots of pitcher plants and ladyslippers. Most of the ladyslipper pics were taken along the roadsides east of Bemidji - tiny vounty roads along the Leech Lake Ojibwe Reservation. One plant had 43 blooms and buds on it! |

Im curious as to how you set it up. I live in zone 6 and have a pond for some goldfish which I can tinker with. So we dont hijack this thread, can you explain your set up in "other plants" please?

The pitcher plants in Minnesota are the ones lined with purple/red. In northern Minnesota, this is Zone 3, cold down to -30 or so. The pitchers I have seen in southern states and the ones they sell in garden stores are more the smaller, green and white-veined ones, which I don't know the hardiness of, and I don't know that I've seen a flower for them.
