My Christmas Cactus is budding!!! This is the first time I have kept one alive for any length of time let alone have it flower. I bought it because all of the orchid ethusiast on this forum were raving about the white ones and how hard they are to come by. Well low and behold my hubby and I were in Home Depot last Xmas and what did I stumble upon.... a
white one!!!

Hi Fred. Yes I call them christmas cactus as well. Zygo cacti. You learn something new every day.
Mine are forming their little buds. (despite the squirrels, that constantly knock them off their perch) They are quite hardy (and root very easily) I have white ones, but your right, I think they have pink in them.
Yours are very pretty. I like the red. I don't see red much over here.
Dust off those cobwebs. "Dear."

Okay I must have not done something right this year. Mine is not showing any signs of buds.

I gave mine indirect light and a cool down of 50 degree farenheit nights for about a month. Was that not long enough?

Beautiful Fred. You still haven't cleaned off the webs? Hehehe!
Mine is done blooming for this year. I spotted some at a supermarket the other day and they were prettier than the one I have. Might buy it the next time I go. The only thing is they get pretty large in size with age.

They still love the sun! Just shorter time exposure. Less water and no fertilizer.

The funny thing is my seed capsules have always been deep pink. The one on my white(with a little pink) one is a white seed capsule!! I'll try and post a pic later with Fred's permission. I've never had a white pod. It's cool! I'm wondering if the pod color is the same as the blossom color?

Hello All,
From the 15th edition of the Ball Red Book. To flower the thanksgiving and Christmas cacti short days, less than 12 hours of light. (Really this means long nights of more than 12 continuous hours of dark. It only takes about 10 foot candles for a few minuets to "mess up" the plants perception of night.) Around 25 days of long nights are required to start the budding process. And / or night temps of around 59F. Nights from 55F to 59 F should give flowers in 9 or 10 weeks no matter what the day (night) length. if you have been doing these things don't give up, maybe just a little more time is required to see the buds on your own plants. Also helpful to stop fertilizing 6 to 8 weeks before the bud initiation process.

Hope this helps someone.

this is the second flowering of these this year
as you can see with the zygo's I have them under clear laser light I let nature take its course with these guys I don't move them into darkness they stay where they are however I did do them a favor this year and re potted them into new potting mix
winter time I don't give them much water but when spring started I started to give them a fair bit of water.

Fred, don't call them cobwebs - they are your lace curtains to go with your beautiful zygos. Think of the work that poor spider went to, just to decorate your plant.

spiders like it in there because its sheltered plus they don't get disturbed much
they build there webs and live under the rim of the pot

A bit of history - The botanical name for zygocactus is schlumbergera, named after the French cactus collector Frederic Schlumberger. The name zygocactus refers to the way the leaf joints are connected.

Nice one there Fred. I like the bloom on bloom thing going on there. As for webs, I've been getting a lot on the Cym. plants lately too. I try to sprey them off with a hose but they make those webs so fast.
