Gesneriad is the big family. Gloxinia (sinningia speciosa), African violet, streptocarpus are some of the more famous family member. You can see some gloxinia species in my collection. The easiest one being sinningia speciosa 'lavender queen'. Another closely related but completely different foliage and flower will be like Sinningia defoliata (Scented unifoliage plant(mine grow more than one leave due to the hormone in the fertilizer i used), Sinningia leucotricha (very hairy foliage that you can actually comb its hair) |

They're beautiful! Now this is one kind of plant that I can not grow. LOL They don't like me.

Those that i grow here in singapore are those prefer warm climate. I grow kohleria together with my orchid. It will helpfully take up all the access water as i water my orchid. |

This is Califonia mini hybrid. Sounds like Califonia is a good place for it to call home. Last edited by markclkk; 08-20-2008 at 02:55 AM. |

Those spotted ones are gorgeous. I especially like the purple. I wonder if I can grow them in my area. Are they all indoor plants or will they grow out doors? I'm going to look into this interesting plant some more. Thanks for the intro. I think?!!

WOW!! That is a very nice and varied collection of gesneriads, but you already knew that. I like the ones with purple and the red ones and the orange ones and the ones with spots and the ones with colored leaves. OK, so I really like them all. Great growing. The third photo under Sinningia 'Susan' x self, Extra Wonderful!! |

Wow... Thanks for the trip down memory lane for me. I used to grow and hybridize African violets and Streptocarpus. I also grew little Sinningias-(They were the tiniest and cutest things!) local, state and national level- Another life time ago.... The only gesneriad that I couldn't grow were gloxinias. I don't know why... Your pictures are beautiful!

Wow- I love streps- I had some great hybrid seedlings in bloom when my house froze 2 years ago- There was one that was soooo pretty- It's very sad- A friend gave me a leaf from one of her streps. I'll grow it, but I've turned a new page and direction, and am so wrapped up with orchids now. They've totally stolen my heart! You have some great plants- keep up the good work!!

A wonderful and varied collection. So many charming plants. Lovely little tuby flowers. I love them all, but of the leafy ones, I like the ones with silver leaves. I actually grew Gloxinia from seed to bloom many years ago. I've no idea how I did it, but just that it was easier than growing them from the purchased bulbs or whatever they are called. They were very beautiful, rich vibrant colors and glorious velvety flowers. Not meant as a criticism, but could I suggest that next time you post lists and lists of 20 or more photos, you group them into groups of 5 with a space between groups? It's a kindness to your viewer -- it will make it easier for someone who's interested in seeing your photos to keep track. |

Beautiful, and quite the collection you've got there! Are they easily propagated by stem cuttings? I saw this plant at my friends house, and I could ask for a small cutting |

Grown from tuber can be a challenge too. As it might not be ready when you planted them into the media. Most gessie prefer clean top soil or african violet mix. Thank you all for watching. Have been busy for past couple of months. I will try to come back once a while to check on messages. mehitabel, I will try to remember that next time i post pictures. Took myself sometime to fully loaded the page also. |
