| Jade Plant needs help
I have a very old Jade Plant which I have never re-potted (I have it in a bump-out window and it covers the entire widow so its hard to remove---ps: I'm also lazy). I realize when Hubby removes this plant some of it will break. What is the best method of re-potting, what soil should I purchase. Should I just knock off the old dirt or should I use a garden hose to wash the dirt off & clean the roots................this poor plant needs help. thank you, lynda |

if nothing else, you can stick the broken off pieces in water for a couple weeks, then pot them up and they'll do just fine.... i got a piece of a very elderly hedge from san diego about 4 yrs ago (they'd trimmed it like a hedge, so i just picked up some little branchlets off the ground) and rooted 'em in water and then potted them up in straight potting soil. one of them's in my kitchen trying to be a hedge again. dontcha just love succulents?

I have several x-mas cattii, which are suculents and I just break off a piece, let it set out for 24hours to harden off the broken spot then stick it in potting soil. 9 outta 10 root. I have tried the water method before but didn't have as much sucess as with the root in soil method.

Hi I have grown Jades off and on for 10 years. I find it is easier on their roots to just wet the root ball, and loosen the soil with your hands. If this is a large older plant it will be easier on it to do it this way. Potting mix for these, well, they don't care that much as long as they are not over watered. The recomended mix however is potting soil with some sand to open the mix and help it to drain, I also throw some pebbles in the bottom for drainage. I do not know the ratio, as I just throw mix together as needed, but there are many web sites that you can get the information from. Try a search on Portulacaria (basically a type of Jade). Whatever breaks off when repotting, I just stick into a pot with soil, and keep it well watered until roots are growing, a single leaf off of one of these can root and produce a plant also (it's quite possible that you have way more than one plant in the pot). Hope that helps!

Since this thread is not about orchids I have moved it onto the "other plants" section of the forum. The "newbie section" is intended for newbie questions about orchids.
