They call it an "orchid cactus" and it has huge flowers. Some are fragrant too.

Norris, Sorry no I don't have one. I've been thinking of getting one cause I've ate them in the Philippines and they are kinda neat. The only thing is they get kind of large in size. Maybe I might get one. I'll let you know if I do.

Nice cuttings solay, hope they take. I've got a ton of epiphyllums and would be interested in trading/sharing cuttings in the future. Norris, I've got some Dragon Fruit cuttings you can have. Send me a pm for details. |

I have four different kinds and I love them 'cause they do look so much like orchids and some smell heavenly too. Solay, they will root in no time and grow like crazy. HAVE FUN. |

Cindy...Those look great! I'll be looking forward to seeing what kinds and what colors. Think of them like orchids....similar habits. Lots of water during growth (bright but no direct light) and then they like a cool rest in winter (less water and coolest room of the house) I only water mine enough to keep it from shriveling (just a little once per week) and it's kept in a room w/only a north facing window and where we have the heat shut off...probably hung around 50 degrees in there during coldest part. As soon as spring hit...I gradually started watering more and gradually moving brighter light. Now it's outside hanging in a tree. |

Depending on how much they like their conditions, they can take anywhere from 1 1/2 years to 3 years to bloom. Mine grow in a wide range of mediums. I have several directly in the ground in regular soil. They get watered when my other succulents get watered which is 1-2 times a week during summer. Others are in pots with large bark mixed with misc garden debris. These are watered more frequently. I only have one that is mounted. It languished for a while getting the same amount of water as most of my other orchids but is now pretty happy since I set up my overhead misting/sprinkler system and is directly under a nozzle. While epiphyllums are nice, I'm actually leaning more towards rhipsalis which have very insignificant flowers but have foliage that stays interesting throughout the year. |

Jay, the funny thing is about 7 or 8 years ago we did try to buy the house next door. Unfortunately someone out bid us. Too bad cause the extra space would have came in handy just about now. Ha! Ha! Ha! Oh, I have the cuttings outside under the shade cloth with my Cyms. I'll have to look into rhipsalis. Never heard of them. Katrina and Wanda, thanks for the encouragement. I think my husband will freak when winter comes and I need to bring them in. Hee! Hee! Hee!

Update... Those cuttings rooted and grew like mad. They suffered last winter since I didn't bring them indoors. No space. The cold damaged a lot of them but even with that, many are blooming nicely. Most have new growths coming in too. I think I lost maybe 3 or 4 plants only. Not bad considering it got pretty cold. Here are the pics.

Wow, they all look stunning!!!!!!! I have only one of those, and it blooms only one night a year. It's still a baby, so I am not sure it will bloom this year. It's these huge white ones that open in the evening and bloom only at night........ |

Nice blooms! If it gets too crowded, send some to Colorado. My former classmate from Letran is also growing Cymbidiums in her backyard in Vallejo. My wife's cousin who also lives in Vallejo is growing orchids too. Orchids must love your area with lots of sun and humidity! They all look healthy and beautiful!

Cath, yours look great too. I especially like the one in the second pic. Too bad we're so far apart. We could be trading. Patti, I'm in the same boat. No space at all.
