wisteria

How often do you prune it back and does it bloom only on new growth? Im ready to put my trellis up but need to know if I should prune it this fall or not. If so, how far back?

If you are (and it sounds like it) planting a new (younger) plant, I've read that you shouldn't do much pruning for the first year or two. Let it get out and braid it onto your trellis. After that, well I still need to figure out if there is a preferential pruning time and technique. Have a place to check, will advise later.

Wisteria bloom on old growth, not the new.

I just checked Wisteria pruning on the internet and found several articles. You might start there.

It came with my new house and grew up the side (has lattice support) of a 12' high shed and the new growth which is unsupported flows down and the tips touch the ground. The vine is about 1 1/2" thick.
