| Orange-spotted flower ID? + orchid garden
hey everybody! I'm just wondering if anybody knows what this flower is. We moved into a new townhouse and I'm just curious! Also, in the second picture that shows the whole plant, there is a big bushy plant growing behind that has not yet flowered this year (if it ever will). Does anybody know what that is...and if it is or is not just a big group of weeds that are taking over? And...I'm attaching a picture of an orchid garden in Poipu, Kauai. All those flowers you see in it are dendrobiums...and that's not all of them! I'm going to add more in a separate post. Just to get your mouth watering and all... Cheers! Arika |

Hello, The orange one is probably Candy Lily. This site, Flower Gardening , describes it as a cross. It could be the blackberry lily parent, but it is a little too bright orange for that. Best Garden on the Web - Blackberry Lily or Leopard Lily (Belamcanda chinensis) , shows the blackberry lily parent and a cute little spider. The plant behind it looks most like a hydrangea. No guesses as to which one without flowers. Some hydrangeas flower on "old wood", only from buds that overwintered on last years canes, and some flower on this years growth or "new wood". Since it is not blooming or at least showing buds by now, my best thought here is that it was cut back to far, all the old canes removed to near ground level in the fall or early spring and that this one needs some old wood to bloom. Most recommendations are to prune hydrangeas in the spring but not too far back. Gardening Australia - Fact Sheet: Pruning Hydrangeas , gives a short paragraph and picture on pruning hydrangeas. I hope this helps. |

Thanks! I like how they come in different colors (Greenhouse gal's links show this). Maybe I will get some more to plant alongside it. And I like the name-Candy lily! As for the potential hydrangea bush-you might be right about it. When we moved in, it was pretty much just barely coming out of the ground, like it had been MOWED down. I almost pulled it up mistaking it for weeds. A lot of the townhouses nearby have them-and they are all blooming. The colors are very vivid here, more so than other hydrangeas I've seen. I'll let it grow and see if it blooms for me next summer. |

That's a hydrangea for sure. You can change the color to blue by making the soil acidic. Post a pic. when it blooms. I love hydrangeas. I have some and they all come out pink. I've been meaning to try to get blue one of these days.

Deffinately a candy iris also goes by blackberry lilly because of the way it holds its seeds which are large & black and clustered like a black berry. I start the seed the next year and give to family. they'll bloom on their 2nd year when started from seed. Heres mine. ![]() ![]() ![]() |
