Dahlias

I wanted to share some blooms I have in the yard today. I use to grow lots of Dahlias but got tired of the aphids that seems to love the flowers. I threw most of them out except these two. Enjoy. Anyone else grow them? I do love them but they are hard to keep healthy.

I love dahlias! I used to grow them a lot. I planted a few tubers this year. We have to dig them up and store them over the winter here. Do you? Yours are beautiful!

No Patti. I'm a lazy gardener. I just leave them in year round. Bulbs, corns, and tubers. The only ones that don't like that are the daffodils and the narcissus. They get weak and only make leaves.

Now I wish I kept the dahlia tubers. There were some really pretty ones. Just got tired of the powdery mildew and aphids and tossed them all out one year. these two I somehow missed.

Galdioli and freesias do really well here too and I don't dig those up either. They multiply on their own.

Cindy

I have Dahlias, but grow them in a pot. I have 8 and they are growing but not blooming yet. We just started getting hot weather so it shouldn't be too long.
I like the waterlily type. Last year was the first year I tried them and I thought that they rotted in the pot, but when I went to plant the new tubers in the pots, about three of the pots were full of tubers!!! Go figure!

Hopefully I will get nice blooms this year. I don't want too many so I am sure I will be giving away tubers!

April, do you have the dinner plate ones? The really huge ones? I want to try those one time. Those are neat.

When you decide to get rid of some of your tubers could I get some? I might want to grow some again. So far no mildew or aphids yet.

I can dig some of mine up for you too. Thanks.

I love dahlias!! I just bought some cut ones today. Yours are gorgeous. I wish I had the room to grow exhibition dahlias.

Cindy,

I will be digging them up this fall, and if I am able to divide them I will be happy to send some your way! I think most of mine are the waterlily type, I don't remember! Will have to wait for blooming!

Orchidementia,
I grow mine in pots on the deck, I can send some tubers to you also, if I get enough divisions.

Well, I'm a lazy gardener, too- but around here they don't survive the winter if they aren't dug up! Our Daffodils do great here! I leave them in the ground and they multiply every year. The dahlias would turn to mush if left over winter... Glads & freesia have to be dug also..)

I would love to take you up on the offer, but I'm running out of room on the porch! I've got so many fuchsias and orchids (and a few others) out there, I'm not sure where I'd put a dahlia ... which is probably just as well; I really don't get enough sun to grow them. Thank you so much though!
