Blooms on my Hoya plant

I love these blooms, and thought I would share. I know that they're not orchids, but they're pretty! Smell heavenly, too! Photo's not the best... sorry.

Hoyas are wonderful! I had several many years ago and just loved them. I used to work in a big commercial greenhouse back in the early 80's when my children were very young, and got really friendly with the owner's wife who let me take cuttings of her prized hoyas and showed me how to propagate them. I wasn't into orchids then. Anyway they were fabulous. After my divorce my ex killed all of my plants by pouring vinegar into them and I was soooooo angry with him. But mine were sure beautiful. I still have a houseful of plants and trees. I love trees!

Love the flowers on the Hoyas. Very pretty Patti.

There was a big interest in these on the forum last year. I'll try to find the thread later. I grow quite a few of the Hoya Ropes.

Hindu Rope...

Patti, the flowers are nice and the fragrance is a big bonus. Thanks for the pic.

Sandra, I assume that the name 'Hindu Rope' originates from the glossy leaves that are contorted and cupped, and form a ropelike appearance. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Bill

Sandra, How beautiful!
I had a Hindu Rope many years ago. Another life time....They are sooo pretty!
Yours is gorgeous!
This little mini leaved one is from a cutting from a friend. It's the first time blooming for it.

Wolfie, I understand. Time to move on- That's what I'm doing. It's hard, I know....

Bill, Thanks! I think that's where the name started... Sandra, do you know?

Patti, I have the same plant I think (Hoya bella) and a Hoya sepens. Funny I got the two for free from an e-bay seller that sent me the wrong order. When I notified him of the mistake, he sent the Cym. seedling and told me to keep the Hoyas. Do you know how old or large they need to be to bloom? I've had it for about 6 months now. I will post a picture tomorrow of it. Thanks for the pic. It's very bretty. I didn't even know they had a fragrance. Bonus!!!

Yep, I remember fondly discussing these last year - love em! I noticed just a few days ago an extremely sweet nectar aroma coming from the area of my room that has my oldest plant. Bear with me as I show you the entire plant and then zoom in on the flowers I have on mine - look a little smaller (flowers) than yours Patti.

Lousy picture but putting the blooms into perspective with the plant

And then zooming in on the bloom(s) a little

And then a little closer so you can see the "fuzzy" appearance of the blooms and note the drops of nectar hanging from the flowers too!

On a side note - I'm always interested in trading cuttings of these if anyone is interested. They travel quite well and I'd be interested in other varieties. I have three others but they have not bloomed yet - a darker pink I got from my sister (cutting) and two variegated that have not bloomed (don't know what color it is - baby starts from our local Fred Meyer store).

I started mine from a cutting about this time last year. It doesn't take long if you take care of the plant. (which I know you will) Good light, water and fert.when dry.. That's about it! The fragrance is really nice, too!

Mike!!! How gorgeous! I think your plant is the standard size leaf. Mine is a miniature leaf. The difference in the flower is cool! I never realized it until now. I used to have one like yours and one like Sandras. The center of my mini one is deep pink. I'll try to get a better picture later. I'm going in and out of the house today trying to get my garden in. It's really warm finally, so I come in from time to time to get a drink and check geeks!

Thank you so much for those gorgeous pictures!!!

Here's a pic. of the free Hoya I got in a 4" pot. Maybe it's still too small for blooms? I can't wait. Fragrant flowers is the best!

Hi Patti! Ya know, I've been thinking bout getting another Hoya.. I can't believe you got it to bloom so wonderfully!

What conditions does this Hoya like the best? Full sun? or Part Shade or indirect?

Thanks!

I have a hoya linearis. Normally it will bloom again in September. When it does, I'll post some pictures. The flowers look the same but they're completely white.

I love the flowers on these guys.
That thread that everyone is talking about also prompted me to get a hoya! I didn't go out and seek one, but when they showed up at a local greenhouse, I couldn't resist. It's the Rope type, I guess, with the convoluted leaves. Mine sure grows slowly!

LOL I just saw one at the Lowe's.. But the leaves are striped sorta.. Ya know what I mean? Not sure what those flowers would look like.. I'm typically after the German Hoya.. the original so to speak. Hopefully I will be able to get it..

I find these to be so lovely. Even though they aren't orchids, I have it on my wish list.

Hmmmm....looks like I'll have to hunt down a hoya plant. VERY pretty!! I've never seen one in bloom...how old do they have to be too bloom?

My Senecio radicans aka String of Bananas is starting to bloom....will have to post pics when they open. Bonus...they smell like cinnamon!

I don't know how old the plant is. I got it some 5 years ago from a florist. I like it without flowers too because the leaves are long and thin which makes them look a little funny.
It's bloomed every year in September/October since I got it. Very reliable.

I like the long, skinny leaves on the linearis (similar in appearance to the terete leaves of a brassavola) ....think I'll have to look for that one specifically. Any fragrance w/those blooms?
