Roses

My orchids keep me busy enough at home but my main volunteer work is roses. I do volunteer work at a rose garden here. 4500 roses, 3500 different varieties. Some lines dating back to the 1500. Also have around 25 roses here at home. The red and white rose is called George Burns & is considered a modern rose. The picture of the white rose is a species rose, R. Laviagata. 1849.
Enjoy

Love that George Burns. Unfortunately, we live in the middle of what used to be a soybean farm, and now we live with a million Japanese beetles. They float on my husbands ponds until they just drown. They get tangled in my hair when I walk across the yard--They eat my green beans in the vegetable garden. Point is, I would never grow anything that might attract more...But thanks for sharing your beautiful pics

My husband and I visited the San Jose rose garden in 2003 (see pic) when our son was married in Santa Cruz. I envy you living so close, Hummer--I love roses!

I could not believe the size of the roses I saw growing in Santa Cruz--I swear the blooms were as big as my head! That is obviously a wonderful climate for growing roses. My roses won't be blooming for a couple more months--we can have frosts here until near the end of May.

Hummer I envy you!!! My grandfather got me started in gardening when I was a little girl. Roses were his favorite and that's what I learned to grow first. One he grew was called 'Lincoln'. A real deep red rose. Those were his favorite. I love roses just as much as orchids! (Bearded Irises were my grandmother's favorite )

Great roses Hummer. I love their fragrance. My Mom was crazy about them and we always had alot around us. Florida is not the greatest for them. Too hot and too humid.

Jenny,
Your dads rose is Mr. Lincoln. Its fragrance is what most people associate with roses.

The roses here have already started their bloom and many will bloom through the fall. Its not unusual to have color at the rose garden year around.

Hummer344 I think you posted a picture of really lovely daffodil a while back in addition to these roses now. I have to say, you have a knack for posting wonderful pictures of all my favorite flowers!
