New color hybrids desert roses

I am amazed at the color variety of the new Chinese hybrid desert roses

Just goes to prove not everything coming from china is cheap junk.

all photos are of seed grown plants.

The white and red are very color consistent. The picotee color can vary on the amount of red around the edge and most do not have the red stripes in the center. The red striped (candy striped) photos in the center can vary on the stripe pattern.

Jerry,

Is it true that roses can be easily infested with spider mites? My wife dare not plant them when she heard this news?

rmt135, I grow a few roses and have never had that problem. Here in the southeast US it's blackspot and aphids. Our humidity is so high in the summer months that we have a very hard time keeping blackspot under control.

Roses are like any other plant. Some get mites some don't. Aphids are more of a problem in our area. Also, in areas with high humditity, roses are suseptable to fungus problems. As a rosarian, my other hobby, I would go looking at rose gardens in your area, talk to friends and find out which roses they are growing & then find one that you like that is less suseptable to fungus problems.

Does everyone realize Desert Roses are more of a succulent and not a true rose at all.

I do not find them to have any problems with growth from insects. they can rot if over watered but if kept pot bound that is not a problem and being a desert plant thy can go a long time without water.

Jerry, They're gorgeous! I love the picotee. Wish I wasn't renting... I can have a small garden here, but don't want to sink a lot into it untill we have our own place. I can dream, though.

Oh, so purty! I like the two-toned ones...and they're my type of plants - can go without watering for several days.

I have roses in the backyard. Every year, I find aphids on them. So we make a habit of putting ladybugs during spring and summer. That's in addition to spraying PharmSolutions.

Yes, Jerry They had them at Lowes during the summer months. I was just answering rmt135's question about roses. I thought he mean't the thorny ones.

elitebettas

web site is still a work in progress. One problem with being a professional programmer is I know what is possible and it is hard to settle for less.

Orchid care and instructions will be in video. It is such a difference from still photos like here on the forum. You can explain so much more in a video.

Just the photo gallery has 900 different species and hybrids with care instructions and unusual characteristics.

I am afraid if I activate a partial web site I will not get around to doing it right.

By the way worm tea sprayed on my roses eliminated aphids in one night.

Desert Rose really come from the desert and can go a month or more without water. The only danger is rot if over watered, but if kept pot bound over-watering ceases to be a problem.

Exclamation

Nice Adeniums.
Sure do look better than the average red one!
I love 'em for their caudexes, or very fat trunks! They look very cool bonsai'd too!

Jerry are the desert roses more of a tender perennial in North Carolina. My Zone is 8A here in the Piedmont. How do they tolerate freezing temps? I.E. 15- 20 degrees F.

You are right Debbie, I was referring to the thorny one & I will take up Hummer344 suggestion.

I will relay all these info to my wife & I think she will revert to the original idea of planting roses. The roses sold here are quite cheap - $2.5 for a baby.

Thanks everybody.

Lucky me. My wife loves to help in the garden. The only thing I have to take care is MY WALLET.

Desert Rose (Adenium obesum) is very tender, not liking temperatures much below 40 degrees F. Here are a couple links with info:

Desert Rose (Adenium obesum)

Detailed information on Desert Rose Adenium obesum

I am thinking I need to purchase one very soon.
