Bromeliad: Tillandsia cyanea (air quill/pink quill plant)...GREEN quill!

I have owned a Tillandsia cyanea for approximately a year. The quill on the bromeliad had purple flowers blooming from its edges when I purchased it and the leaves and plant are healthy. It has not bloomed since the initial purchase.

Strangely enough, the QUILL portion of the plant is completely GREEN and has never turned color.

Does this mean there is something wrong with the plant? I'm not aware of any Tillandsia species like this.

Thanks!
