| Question about bromeliads?? I have three bromeliads and all of them have babies coming out of them. When do I seperate these from the mother? How do I seperate them? Any advice would be appreciated.

It's been quite awhile since I've grown these, however, they send up new pups around the base of the mother plant. When the pups are about 5-6 inches in diameter, you can separate them and repot. They like a loose draining soil, somewhat like a cactus soil. Remember that the leaves hold water in the center of the plant. Sorry I can't remember all my care tips from years ago, but you might do a Google search for bromeliad societies - there's quite a few across the country. Here's one link for you. http://bsi.org/

orchid girl, I have a bunch in my yard. When the pups get to 1/3 - 1/2 the size of the mother plant I usually just take away the mother plant by cutting it away from the pup. So far so good. I'v been told that the mother plant will eventually die if you don't do that but some of the ones I have continue to get pups but the mothers have not died off. It could be different from one bromeliad to another. It could also be that in South Florida the conditions are so good for them that they just keep growing. You might have the same luck in Alabama. I love them cause their blooms last such a long time. Good luck NancyG

I have a Neoregalia that I've had for quite some time (like, ten years) and it is jut this HUGE clump, now, probably about 4 feet wide. It's really quite attractive. But I like big, showy specimen plants... -Cj

LCA, Here is a pic of my Aechmea fasciata, one of the more common bromeliads. I've had it for about 5 years now. I use to cut the pups off from the mother plant and transplant them, but now I've let one of the original pups grow with new 2 pups that are almost the size of the mother pup. Here is a pic of the flower
