| The plant in that first pic finally bloomed. It was strange. A big brown bubble looking pod.About the size of an egg. When it opened it was large, maybe 4" across and tan with maroon fiber like threads. Kind of reminded me of polyester or double knit. Not really pretty but interesting. Sure wish someone knew what this creature is! When it was give to me I was told it was a cactus. Type unknown. I'm not so sure. Thought someone who grows cacti might know. It has no thorns, and if a piece breaks just stick it and it roots. Oh well! I'll just name it mysterious plant. Gladys |

| Those strange plants with the finger like projections are in the Stapelia family. Also known as the starfish flower or carion plant. Freds is a smaller variety and should produce a 1" flower with a glossy brown lifesaver like ring in the middle of a beige 5 pointed "star" flower. The other appears to be the larger variety of stapelia I think the species is "gigantia" or somthing like that. I have one of the plants. It produces huge bubble like flowers that open to lifesize starfish flowers that really look like ocean starfish. However they smell quite bad, thus the name "carion flower" when outside for the summer, I have actually had flies lay eggs in the flowers, with resultant maggots. Yuk!! The flower is beautiful, if you can get beyond the smell. I have seen the larger stapelia grown outdoors and dug for winter in Atlanta, GA. I haven't tried it in OK, but might if I can get to where I am home most nights and can tend to watering. Hope this helps. Cathy |

| Wonderful plants, Fred... and growing them for your father is a really great way of keeping him nearby. I have many of my mother's begonias that I keep for her, 15 years after her death, and I always think of her when I care for them. Good people become the plants they loved, don't ya think? Thanks for showing us all you do!
