What Kind of plant is this?

My mother has this plant and its her favorite. I always wonder what kind of plant it is.
she was cleaning up her plant and gave me a cutting.

I don't know the scientific name for this plant but the common name is Umbrella Tree. I have one in my living room.

the schefflera that i have looks a lot different than that plant- but they are great plants.......very easy to propagate, and shape and ever so forgiving.

there was one my work, everybody had given up on. It was basically a bunch of long sticks and a few leaves (that never held on for very long), but a finally a co-worker felt sorry for it and asked if it had a chance. I tidied it up, chopped it back and gave it s bit of time and it has fully recovered as is lush and green. The funny thing is the everyone in the office now adores it, so i am often snipping of a branch or two to make them a plant of their own ( i've grabbed a couple myself). I just take the cut branch and put it in plain ol' water, 10-20 days the roots bud, grow, get sub-roots and then are ready for a nice rich well draining soil.

i've seen somewhere that they can produce strange flowers and then dark berries (toxic) if they are mature enough and get their "ideal" conditions.
