Does a gardenia qualify as "other plants"? This could be a dumb question but can you take a cutting from a gardenia bush? I have one that belonged to my mom who's no longer in this world and my sister would like to have a piece of it. It was mom's favorite flower. If not, I'll give her the plant. If yes, how do I go about it? It's healthy and has been blooming like crazy this summer. Thanks! Sue

I am not an expert on gardenia's but my mom has one - and I've had one before too. They are semi-house plants in my "neck of the woods". Looks like seeds are the most common way to propogate them but they can be propagated (taken from information source) from semi-hardwood cuttings as well. Cuttings from actively growing plants will root the most quickly. Best rooting is obtained using a medium strength rooting hormone (e.g. 0.1% IBA and 0.05% NAA) (Koob, email) and either a mist system or a humidity chamber. Rooting takes place in 1 to 6 months. (Koob 1999). Good luck.

Gardenia stem cuttings are easy to start. You need cuttings from this year's growth. Rather than explain in detail how to do this, I've attached a couple links to help you. Be sure that you follow the sanitation rules, just as you would for orchids. Rootone rooting hormone works quite well on cuttings. You can usually find a small package of it at most gardening centers for a couple dollars. Do not reuse any of the hormone or put back into the container. Many years ago, we started new plants from forsythia bushes and also azaleas. Same procedure. Good luck. http://www.clemson.edu/allendale/local/pdf/stemcut.pdf http://www.briansgarden.com/2002/10/...-gardenia.html

Perfect. Thank you so much. I printed the information from the pages and from this thread and will read everything and give it a try. My sister will be happy

Just in case you are not successful you also could try 'grafting'. http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/MG336 (check under propagation) I hope you succeed with the cuttings.Good luck
