NOID Lily

Found this plant flowering in the garden, and I have been told it is a tiger lily. Can someone ID it for me please. I know there are zillions of crosses but I may get lucky.

Bill

It's definitely an Asiatic Lilly of some type and grows from a bulb.. They come in many colors. I have many growing in my garden... Tiger lillies are typically orange "wild" daylillies. In the midwest they are usually planted in ditches because they naturalize so well. I'll see if I can run out and take some pictures of both for you...

Here you go..

Note the Asiatic Lilly. Foliage grows straight up and the flowers bloom at the top (like a Dendrobium).

The Daylilly grows more grass like and sends up multiple spikes of blooms (like a Cymbidium)...

Trying to keep it about orchids!

Kasjak, many thanks for the pics and the effort required to get them. I don't know what that thing is in your hand but I'm glad it is not in mine.

BILL, BILL, I found the name!!!

Your flower is an Alstroemeria. These are great garden or cut flowers. They come in about a squillion colours. Here's a link to many many pics of Alstromeria.

The one we have outside our apartment, in bloom now, is a species one: Alstroemeria psittacina. I'll try to post a pic of it tomorrow if i get a chance.

Kevin, that is definitely a 'top of the class' answer. You can move your desk immediately. Thanks for the ID.

Kasjak, I am assuming that you were just about to return the troutling to its normal habitat after the pic. was taken. Thanks for you help.

Bill

Bill,
Very lovely. Are they scented? Asiatic lillies in the genus Lilium and Alstromeria
are not usually scented. Oriental lilies and tiger lilies (L. lancifolium) are usually
quite scented. I have several Asiatic that just finished blooming for me here
and my oriental lilies are all budding right now.

Bill, My fish always go back.. I've never been a fish eater unless your talking about Arthur Treachers! That fish is about 3-4 years old... A granddad would top out at around 10 inches.

On the surface, mostly because of the orange colours and the spots, they may appear alike, but Tiger Lilies are substantially different from Alstromeria. The plants Bill has are Alstromeria not Tiger Lilies. Here's a pic of a true Tiger Lily. Their scientific name is Lilium lancifolium and they grow wild in many parts of the US. Here are a number of pics showing their plant and flower habit. You'll notice that Tiger Lilies are quite different from Alstromeria, especially in their petal shape, flower stance, and plant habit.

I have some lilium lancifolium under my sons window. I got them from the side of a house where I used to work. The people who owned the property said that they had been there since before they had owned it, and they had owned the property 20 years. The house was approx. 100 years old and the tiger lilies looked like an enormous bush when I dug up about 5 plants. After they bloom, I harvest the seeds as they drop off or I leave them for the next year.

Kevin, thanks for the pics. The plants are very pretty and I must try for a few bulbs to plant with the one I have found. Should make a nice display.

Brook, there are occasions when I don't; it depends largely on the situation?

Bill

The blooming habit of the daylily is actually like the Cymbidium also and not like the Dendrobium. The inflorescence of the daylily comes form the base of the plant like a Cymbidium. Daylilies don't have canes from which flowes bloom at the top and I don't off the top of my head, know of a Dendrobium that blooms form the base of the plant.

My lilium lancifolium (tiger lily) has just bloomed so I thought I would post a pic of it. I cannot guarantee it is a great pic cause I did it on my cell phone.

I figured out how to get the pics off the phone finally. My phone died last week, and after 120 mile round trip to the main cell store for a relpacement, they finally told me how to get the pics off the phone to the computer, of course I lost all of my pics of orchid flowers, and my sniffy pics, but at least now I know. I will be able to post some pics now-yay!

I agree Bill it does depend largely upon the situation lol!
