Stylidium debile

Here are some pictures of my Stylidium debile plant that just bloomed.

Stylidium debile, or the Frail Trigger Plant, is a protocarnivorous plant. The plant's leaves are not carnivorous, but the flower stalk is suspected to be carnivorous (scientists are not 100% certain of the plant's carnivorous status, but are currently researching it).

The most interesting part of this plant is its flower (which is really small, maybe 2-3mm across), when the stigma is touched, it very rapidly moves to the other side of the flower. It does this very quickly, more rapidly than a Venus Flytrap for those that have seen one in action.

I do not have the capability of making a video of the plant in action, but there are many such videos all over the web (I would link to an animated gif file on the ICPS forum, but linking to other forums is forbidden, and I could post the gif but it is not mine, so I would not want to invoke any kind of copyright infringement), check it out if you are interested, it is really cool plant, certainly one of the most interesting plants in my collection.

Justin

Michael,

I would offer a division to you as well, but it seems that the import regulations to Australia are famous for being very restrictive. Seeing as the plant is native to Australia, I would imagine procuring one in your part of the world might be somewhat easier for you than it was for me. I was lucky enough to obtain mine through auction, most people have to grow them from seed.

If anybody in the USA is interested in getting a division of this plant, I have enough growths that I could give away one more division. I love trading plants, and this one is certainly really cool!

Justin

It's such an easy plant to grow, isn't it? Thanks for the concern about copyright on the animation image that I posted on the ICPS forum. No reason for it, though! I released it under the Creative Commons license. I would post it here, but I haven't met the 5 post threshold to link URLs (a good policy). So feel free to post it anyway and use it where ever you please, as long as there's attribution.

Cheers!

Alright, thanks for the permission to post the file! And, yes I have found it to be a very easy plant to grow, I was quite surprised to find how quickly the plant went to flower!

So, compliments of Kitkor, here is the animation:

Hmm, it does not seem to be working, if the Moderators have any suggestions on how to get an animated gif file working, let me know. The file might be too large.

My pleasure. I think if you try hotlinking the image instead of attaching it? e.g. (img)full url of image(/img)

I keep my S. debile in the greenhouse over winter and it continues to flower, even though the temperatures are down to 40 degrees Fahrenheit. It seems to be slowing down a bit, but it could just be retreating and plotting to take over the greenhouse in the spring. If you're not careful, the stolons will poke out the bottom of the pot and invade its neighbors.

Since this forum does not permit linking to other forums and since Kitkor gave me permission to use his animation, I have uploaded to an image hosting website. Maybe this will work...
