After seeing all the beautiful Hoyas some of you had posted I've been hunting and hunting but never found one until today!!! But go figure pay day is tomarrow
They all (3) of them has some sun burnt leaves and they moved them inside so all the more reason to rescue at least one of them from Wall mart!! So hopefully the one I like will still be here tomarrow :fingers_crossed:
Its a varigated Hoya ruba and will be my first if its still here ater 3pm lol
I googled it its got pink flowers with darker pink /magenta?centers in the blooms. Wish me luck if I do get it some culture help will be needed for sure never even knew about them until you guys with all your pics lol

Please check for bugs before you buy it ........... Hoyas grow similar to orchids in the wild, but have the same bugs sometimes as well.........
I brought home one with bugs.....it had to go back in the few weeks....and the whole area were it was hanging had to be treated......

I am so happy for you! I am sure it will still be at the store tomorrow, especially if they are not in the best shape. I love Hoyas and I have been keeping my eye out for some different varieties too.
I have had one for 12 years now and it finally gave me my first bloom last month! I did everything wrong with it for the first 7 years but it still managed to survive (although just barely) and after I gave it better care it has been growing like a weed. I have never had bug problems with it, thank goodness.

I have learned that there are several 'do nots' for growing Hoyas - do not disturb the plant once buds appear, do not remove the dead flowers and do not repot until it is unavoidable. They like lots of sunlight and they seem to love a good misting but not when the plant is in bloom.

Looking forward to seeing a picture when you get it tomorrow!

Emmaye, I bought a Hoya Ruby Sue that is VERY full. If you would like, I will take some cuttings off of it and send you. I also have a noid that most are thinking is carnosa that I could take a cutting from. Let me know.

Congrats Em. As you know I love these.

So you can look up the culture requirements, rubra is actually a carnosa.

Also, sorry to disagree Carkin, but like orchids, different Hoyas require different cultures, saying that Hoyas require "do not disturb the plant once buds appear, do not remove the dead flowers and do not repot until it is unavoidable. They like lots of sunlight and they seem to love a good misting but not when the plant is in bloom" is simply incorrect.

Woo hoo Emmaye! I bought my first one about 3 months ago at my local Walmart, sounds like the one you are looking at. I have to thank Renee for all her beautiful photos that enabled me to make such a wise purchase!

Well thank you Lisa.

Come spring remind me you like them. I just started 63 cuttings a few weeks ago, and so far it looks like about 50 of them have rooted. After living with them through the winter, I'll be looking for places to send them lol

Oops...sorry. I should have qualified that by saying that is what I learned for my Hoya carnosa basic species. I didn't mean to over-generalize and I didn't realize that rubra had different requirements.

Thanks everyone !
The cashier said these have been there a few weeks because they are burned some worse than others she was pretty sure they would still be there tmw.
Lynne did send me a couple rope cuttings last year but I killed them I don't know how to root these from cuttings. I had stuck them in a glass of water with some rooting hormone like those ivy (marble looking indoor ones) how to root those but nope didn't work.
I would love some cutting of different ones being offered by some of you but no idea how to get them to root
If I get it tmw (if its still there) I will post pics
Thanks again!!!

Emmaye- I rooted a bunch recently, and didn't lose a single one. I dipped the ends in rooting hormone powder, and then stuck them in damp potting soil, which is what I have been keeping all my Hoyas in. They've all rooted, and are all showing lovely new growth above the soil now as well.

rubra doesn't have different requirements than carnosa, because rubra IS carnosa

I rescued a large VERY BADLY sunburned hoya carnosa last year - it is not flourishing - so I'm certain you won't have any issues. Wow - hard to believe you had a problem rooting any of these? I just stick them in water and they root easily every time. Sometimes the joints at the leaves have little roots already growing before taking cuttings - and then you don't even have to pre-root them - just stick them directly into moist soil and keep it moist. My hoyas are my only current bright spot in my plant collection - they can take a licking and just keep ticking - hardy they are from my perspective! I'll start some cuttings as well and send you some if you don't get overloaded from others noted also taking cuttings on this thread!

I've found most my Hoyas and other different plants at Lowes or K-mart and such. I scope out what they have. But I have walked away from some because they are infested with mealies. My latest hunts are for Rhypsallis (sp?) But same thing. Watch for mealies.
Emmaye, I have more rope. You just need to put it in dirt. I haven't tried it personally yet. Guess I should. I have another one too. A fluffy white flower. I haven't killed it yet. But even that one looked a bit funky, (bug question wise) but I brought it home anyway.

i just got my first hoya a couple weeks ago too. it was a lil pot i found at the nursery when they were having a big sale...it was about 2 bucks so i went for it it's variegated, but that's about all i know about it. it didn't have a tag or anything.

as a general rule, do these guys like to be kept moist, or dry out between waterings?

tangers - there is no general rule for them. Different ones like to dry out, others like to remain moist. Put up a pic and maybe we will be able to point you in the right direction though.

I agree that many Hoyas are really easy to root. I had been rooting them all in S/H then converting once the root system was large enough.

This last batch though, I rooted them all in straight Turface.

JoBeth, no didn't start any multiflora cuttings, the plant I have isn't big enough to take cuttings yet. And I don't have the linearis anymore, Mike has got the only pieces of it now.

Oh no Renee! Me the only pieces - THAT is scary! My little one has two growing lengths about 4-6 inches long. Now I'm REALLY going to have to cheer her to grow......."come on baby.......grow.......so I can cut you up........". LOL Something about that just sounds wrong?

Thank you for the encouragement Mayres! I just LOVE all of your Hoyas and hope someday to have such a nice collection as yours. I still have so much to learn but that is half the fun, right?
I wish that I can go to your Walmart!

What type of Hoyas? I hope that they will still be there for you this weekend!
Sounds like the Walmart in my area needs to step it up a bit...all of yours are making it look bad!

I'm going to have to check out Walmart now. I've been keeping an eye out for some ever since I saw some pictures on here. Hoyas and the Easter cactus. Never could find any at the big box stores.
