yeap, ditto on the "crazy hot". had these devils in my garden too, but after several times trying, start to get the hand of it, initially a few slice, then quarter pod, then half pod and now i can use entire chili pod for one cooking.
i love the smell of it.

After playing around, I right now have 4 Bhut plants started right now. They have put on their first blooms even though I think the plants are still rather small just yet. But I agree, they are INSANELY hot, but we are growing ours to dry down for hot wing spices. Im known in 4 places already for my insanity wings. ha ha ha. I normally use Habs, but now that I have my hands on the Bhuts, I can get nuts.

I've never heard of Bhut Jolokia before. I would love to get my hands on a couple of those to try and grow. We love spicy foods over here and my sister grows some very spicy ones.

I had no luck this year with peppers. It's been so hot that I've only gotten TWO measly peppers from four plants. Usually I'm overrun with peppers and I have to pick them off and freeze or throw them away.

I've never tried this. I usually freeze them whole. I will have to try next year if my pepper plants produce anything. Hopefully it won't be so hot next year. We had almost two months straight of over 100° weather with not a drop of rain.

Aren't those also called piquin peppers? I've been trying to get my hands on those. We pickle those.

Where'd you get your plants?

maria,
The nickname for this pepper is "ghost chili"
started from seed, took a a long time to find the seed, and then the website was out, as many people have asked and tried to get some too...
Here is a picture of an earthbox containing 1 bhut at each end, and a filius blue in the middle, it got overshadowed by the bhuts, but, producing too
My advice about the seed, just keep looking, that is what we did, finally lucked out!

Maybe the squirrels will take a bite and then never eat another thing in your yard.

I grew peppers this year for the first time. I chose California Wonder Bells, Jalapenos, Bhut Jolokias, Cayennes, Jalapenos, and Chinese Multicolors. The Chinese Multicolors never germinated, and I did not get very good results from any of the others except the Bhuts. I got about 30 peppers, I gave most of them away. I tried one, hands down the hottest thing I've ever eaten, it actually burned my mouth to the point that foods tasted funny for a few days. Not the most pleasant experience, but it was fun especially since it was something I grew. Next year I plan on doing more peppers, and after the dismal performance of my tomatoes, I don't think I will try tomatoes again. But, the peppers are a lot of fun.

Never heard of these. I'm not into spicy food, I don't get why anyone would make themselves suffer on purpose. lol.
My dad eats whatever pepper is at hand during meals, he just takes bites off of them like it's no big deal. I just can't do it.

Well since you asked, I will give a more detailed account of it. I brought a pepper in with me to work, only 3 of us were brave enough to try, so I sliced the pepper into thirds and we each chewed and swallowed. At first it was not hot it almost had a tangy flavor with citrus notes. Then after about 20 seconds the heat came on. I started sweating profusely, my mouth felt like it was on fire (I've tried Habeneros before and they seem downright mild by comparison), it almost felt a little difficult to breathe. Then I started hiccuping. The heat seemed to peak at around 5 minutes or so. Then after another 5 minutes, I started to feel nauseated, I did not actually vomit but it felt like I might. At around the 25 minute mark, the heat finally subsided and after another 15 minutes the heat feeling was gone. I still felt ever so slightly nauseated for the rest of the day, but it wasn't that bad. For a couple of days food tasted kind of funny, similar to how food tastes after one has burned their mouth, just kind of funny.

So, that is the play by play of my Bhut jolokia experience. Will I ever do it again, let's just say maybe. Plus next year I want to do some of those Trinadad peppers, that are supposed to be even hotter. I am not a chilihead normally, I enjoy the challenge of growing different plants, and I guess it gives me some bragging rights. Next year my focus on plants in the garden will be peppers mainly because they are just a lot of fun.

Justin

Wow Justin!! I love my peppers but I would have never tried the bhut jolokia by itself.

I'm kinda afraid to use the ones that Joyce so very kindly sent me. lol I will though just because I've always wanted to. I'll probably use it in a sauce of some sort.

Hopefully I will be able to germinate some of the seeds and have a bunch of pepper plants next year.

Yeah, I'm not into spicey. Even Poblanos are unpredictable. I'll just do roasted red peppers with some goat cheese or such.

Can you put me on that list too, Joyce? I love to have new peppers to put in my salsa.
