Clematis - full sun or shade?

What are your thoughts on this? I've read in one place they like partial to full sun, and in another place partial shade.
Ah, the internet - both a blessing and a curse!

We have them in a spot at my house where they get full sun until late afternoon. Also, back when I was in high school and lived with my parents, we had some clematis that was in full sun. I think they can have both quite honestly.

I've gone a little mental over clematis this year...I've got six in my garden now. One is doing pretty well in partial sun, another doing well in full sun. A couple are getting established, so they are taking their time to tell me how they're doing.

I think, like orchids, you will find different clematis hybrids to have different sun requirements. What really gets me confused is the different pruning recommendations!

I think it depends on the species. My mother has two, one under/in an apple tree so that one get dappled sun for half the day. The second gets full sun from 8am to 2 pm.

Further note, I believe that they can tolerate more sun as long as the roots are kept shaded and cool.

I love the look of clematis, that one it totally going in my imaginary yard.

I think eastern exposure is best. My one at my mothers gets full sun until noon and the ones I have here at my house are in dappled light all day. You have a cooler climate than I do so yours could do sun longer, I seem to recall reading that the important thing was they like their roots cooler, so on mine that got sun, I used the large (6 to 8 inch) river rock for mulch as it kept the soil cooler underneath. Mine are also potted.

I grew them in full sun all day on a chain-link fence when we lived in Central OH. They bloomed a lot.
