Night Blooming Cereus

I've been watching this one for a few days. Here are a couple of early shots.

I'm going to go check one more time. Then I think I'm going to hit the sack.

Wow. The bud looks very nice. Can't wait to see the actual bloom.

Sorry about the delay. These were taken at 12:30 am but it was too late to diddle with the pictures and post them last night.

It looks like it may have opened up more but I couldn't stay up and wait. There was a total of three buds but two dropped off prematurely.

The greenhouse I work in has one of these on display and it's currently been in bloom the past month and a half, but of course we only see the new buds and spent blooms because we are closed and nobody around usually 8 or 9PM thru 7AM. Thanks for sharing photos!

That is gorgeous!

Does it have fragrance? I find night bloomers usually have a very strong fragrance after dark.

That's absolutely stunning! I especially appreciate that 3rd photo of the sepals from the back. Thank you for staying up to photograph this one!

'K' - sea critter was on my mind too. I labled one such last night.
Night Blooming Cereus-squid-master-and-his-army-2.jpg
I wish I could have zoomed in a little closer. I got a chuckle when I named it. "Squid master and his army." That's either the late hour and cabernet, or my usual off-beat sense of humor.
Emmaye; I love that song. I think I'm a generation (or two) ahead of you, but I think this is a timeless song.
We can put it in the line up for a party at Dounoharm's.

How big is your plant? Care to share of photo of the whole plant sometime? Just curious. The one at work is pretty big, I'm guessing between six to eight ft tall.

Oh, and hubby said..."a plant that blooms once in the middle of the night? What kind of plant is that to have?"
An odd one.!
He came out with me a couple of times last night, until bedtime. And he checked it first thing this a.m. around six. It was already closed. And he was defnately interested.

My mother had given me a start of this plant many years ago. It grows really crazy! Never did anything for me so dumped it after a few years. I didn't know what I had or really how to care for it. I'm sorry now...it's really gorgeous and worth the wait. Thanks for sharing!

Good job - I have the same cactus and mine has a nice scent, sort of honey & vanilla...does yours??? It's a shame that this blooms @ night, but very much worth it.

I did not notice a scent, but I did not think to check either. (when will I learn?)
I have mine in dirt in a pot. They are part of the epiphyllim (sp?) family I think. I have several different types thanks to Solay (Cindy). They are coming along.
I haven't photoed the plant yet. I'll try to do that. Its not that big.

Hi Imartiny, You took some great photos. I love the layers and layers of petals and sepals on this bloom. It"s gorgeous and I bet it smells heavenly. Do you know what country it originates from? It seems to have a narrow window for polination. I wonder what night visitors it's designed to attract, moths or bats?

I didn't forget. Just took me a while! This is the whole plant. It usually sits in this bird planter.

Oh that is so cool, although I'm not sure I'd be able to stay up late enough to see it!

Lmartiny - What is the name of the plant in your last picture, the one with the purple leaves? I like that too!
