Monster Blackberries

We planted 15 blackberry bushes 3 years ago and this year they are really producing like crazy! This is one we picked today in my 11 year old son's hand, it's a monster Just wanted to share.

And the big ones are so sweet...yum! We have been getting a bowl full daily for almost the past 2 weeks. I've already made 5 cobblers, and still ended up freezing a ton of them. I guess I need to learn how to make jam!

Just get a package of sure jell and use the freezer jam recipe. That's what I do for the strawberries and we love it!!!

I'm going to try the freezer jam this year. Last year I tried an old canning recipe and didn't have too much luck with it

Wow! They look so yummy! When we bought our home, the prior owner had many fruit trees and shrubs planted. There was an apricot, plum and cherry tree along with almost a third of the backyard planted with raspberries all along the back of the property. Our backyard is pretty good sized and these things were so overgrown. We ended up chopping alomost all of them down and then hubby finally got tired of them and took them all out. But we have gooseberries but we have to fight with the birds to get at them. We've tried netting but that only holds them back so long. Raspberries sound so good right now!

They are We bought the thornless variety! We hung CDs on strings this year and so far the birds have stayed away. Last year we had to fight them for the ripe ones. We have a creek that runs through our backyard and on the other side is an old horse pasture. We planted them over there so they have plenty of room to grow and get big.

I go up to Oregon every year to 1. visit a relative & 2 get black berries and make wild blackberry jelly.(not necessarily in that order. LOL) People line up for some of that jelly. I also make apricot jam, and Bosenberry jelly. Just yesterday I made two batches of Strawberry jam. People ask me what my secret is and I say fruit. If you get good fruit, you get good jam. Got that piece of advise from my mother.

Man, I want some of those. Wish I had some ground to plant in. I made Jam at a friend's house and it was super easy.

We haven't fertilized them so far. I can't imagine how big they would be if we did

Hi retroresale,Yummy Yum! Pass the cinnamin toast! So you get these huge sweet berries from thornless bushes? Do you know what variety this is?

Synda how did you manage to keep it together when your lovey hubby removed all those wonderful fruit trees. I think I would have passed out!

This seems like a bumper crop year! My mom's house has a whole row of blackberries that my dad used to grow. They are going nuts, too! You just reminded me that I need to do a little harvesting myself!
Good job on your monsters!

[QUOTE=Orchidchick;276460]Hi retroresale,Yummy Yum! Pass the cinnamin toast! So you get these huge sweet berries from thornless bushes? Do you know what variety this is?

I don't remember the variety names, we planted about 4 different varieties years ago. I think my husband is still using the containers for some of his garden plants. I will see if the labels are still readable. They were all from Lowes or HD. We even waited until they had them on clearance. I think we paid $2.00 a bush. This is year 3, we didn't get any that first year and last year we only got a couple of bowls full. This year I'm giving them away to the neighbors, freezing them, and I think I have made about 8 cobblers for us and family. We've been getting about 4 to 6 cups a day for the past 2 weeks, and there are plenty more yet to ripen. I will be looking forward to smoothies this winter with my frozen stash yum.
