Hoyas - the PERFECT orchid companion plants!

After semi-hijacking someone else's thread for awhile (sorry) talking about one of my favorite plants - decided to start my own thread and continue "over here".
Some asked for a pic of some of my hoyas - and I noted that folks should get a sense of the some of the different leaf shapes with hoyas. This is not all I have nor do I have anywhere near all the possible leaf types - but here are a few of my small & medium sized plants......
Group picture with my Iwanagara Apple Blossom - they are definately "friends".

A little closer look at the top portion for better view.

A little closer look at the bottom portion for better view.

Closeup of lecunosa with flowers about ready to open - lots of flowers about ready to open (2nd flush of blooms this season already!) - note small size of both blooms and leaves!

Thanks Mike! Awesome plants you've got there! I really like the leaves on the linearis that I see in the middle.

Mind if I post a photo of my new setup?

Wow didn't know there were so many variations in the leaves shapes and sizes. Maybe now I will have better luck finding one. Haven't as of yet but may have over looked them not knowing. In garden centers at Home depot for example. If they carried them woul I be looking in the out side area or inside are of the plants ?
Thanks for posting this

I find a lot of hoyas indoors- as they are indoor plants. (in my reigon)
But some areas (hoter areas) may put in shade outdoors.

Kill a hoya? I thought they were "indestructable"? They seem to be infinitely easier to keep alive than orchids in my book!
MA - as noted, you could potentially find them in EITHER indoors or outdoors plants, depending upon the area of the country. They may be outdoors in your area? In my area they are indoors except that during the warm months people take them outside like some of us take our orchids outdoors.......

Well, since we are sharing, here is my little collection. I love my "Green Bean" hoya. I want a serpens and a curtisii so bad, but haven't been able to find any close by. I have a fishtail hoya that I found on the clearance shelf that I'm trying to nurse back to health, it's not too pretty right now I LOVE looking at Hoyas and all the different foliage! More pics please!

Mayres, what is the one in the orange pot on top. I love that one, very pretty leaves.

I find them inside the stores in my area. It's like a treasure hunt every time we go there. I always hope they have one I don't already have...and my husband hopes they don't

WOW! Thanks for sharing those GREAT pics! You have some mighty fine plants there! Actually the hoya in the orange pot has nearly all of its foliage out of view in this photo - the leaves are of the larger (what I can "standard" garden-type variety). There is one of the developing pink flowers on a strand of leaves off to the extreme left - the majority of the plant is behind the plant right front. It is a carnosa. Maybe next weekend I'll get REAL brave and go for a total family shot? I need to get some nice wall hangers & pots like many of you have - mine are lying on shelves and objects all over the place!

I know! It has a few more since I took that photo...5 more on the way through the mail, and 5 more from a local friend will be joining them all on the shelf. You are all bad influences. It was too hard to not order more.

I have 3 rowdy boys (4 including hubby) and 2 cats, and if I don't hang things up they eventually end up on the floor in a heap! Things are constantly getting broken around here The pot wall hangers are under $4.00 at my home depot, and they work really well. The plants almost hide them completely.

I found it at Wal-Mart of all places. It's one of those Exotic Angel Plants. I've seen a few smaller ones on ebay.

I found them by the inside house plants, by the decorative metal hangers. Mine had them on clearance so I bought a few of them.

I hear ya there retroresale, Hubby is going to pick up that sweet hoya after he gets off work for me today, so now Im going to have a bigger hoya. YEAH!!!!!

Do you mind trying to get a picture of the hanger for the wall? I could definately use something like that here, and if I can find it on home depot's website I could order it and have it sent here. I totally love the idea. If I showed that to my mom she probably would want to do that too.

I have two of the variegated plants that look exactly like the pics Cindi shared with us. I got them as "starter plants" in the indoor plant department of an "all-in-one" type shopping store (Fred Meyer) for something like $1.29! It is interesting how they grow pink tinted when the leaves are young - also some of the leaves are entirely white. At this time my plants are noids - maybe when they bloom I'll get a hint as to what they are?

It's basically just a circle that you sit a slightly smaller pot (or a pot with a rim) onto. The back part is flat and attaches to the wall with 2 screws which are included with wall anchors as well. Here is a better pic of my other one. I think they came in two sizes. These are the bigger ones.

OUTSTANDINGLY cool!!!! LOL now the search begins. That is just too cool. Plants as visual live art to be hung on walls. Im totally digging the idea, and the way you did your hoyas they just look like are floating on the walls. And love the frog!!

Emm, even down here where I can grow some of them outside year round, they are still found in the indoor section at the stores. Usually hanging over the orchids.

JoBeth, your set up looks nice, wish mine were that neat.

What did you decide to root them in?

Mike, hope you don't mind me jumping in.

These three are blooming now.

Hoya multiflora, just got this one as a cutting about two months ago. I rooted it in S/H, and will keep it in S/H, although it needs to be moved to a bigger pot soon.

Hoya obovata, first bloom for me. I tried to include some of the leaves in the picture.

And Hoya fungii, it's got two more penduncles budding up right now. One of my favorites, easy to care for, temp tolerant, beautiful leaves and on and on.

Thanks! I find that if I hang them on the walls I always have room for more. I hang all sorts of "things" on the walls. A plus is you don't have to dust around them either.

Renee, I had to stick them in whatever pots I had, some were 3 inch, some were 4 inch. I just put them in regular soil like I did with my serpens and cummingiana. When I unwrapped the cuttings, the paziae had the nice clump of roots like you said, and then there was another that had a tiny root starting. Can't remember which one now though. Either way, I figured they'd be fine if I stick them in soil like I did the other two I got as cuttings a couple years ago.

Renee- the multiflora is GORGEOUS. It is on my wishlist and I should be able to get it later this summer from a place in Delaware. That way it doesn't travel too far. The obovata I just got, and I am looking forward to the fungii you sent me, growing and blooming

I blame retroresale for making me go out and hunt for 'Chelsea'. I found it at the 'other' Lowe's in my area that has the smallest houseplant section ever. It was the only Hoya I've ever seen there.

I went on the hunt as well but no such luck. I'm up north visiting my mom so maybe when I get home I'll go in search of it again.
I shouldn't have opened this thread, just another addiction...

retroresale, I haven't smelled anything, but I haven't tried the different times of the day.

BluPeaches, I'm trying that out right now. So far so good. I know they root really really well in Leca with S/H, I'm trying the waterhogs out in S/H to grow on, and I'm trying the ones that like to dry out in traditional potting with LECA.

It definitely was meant to be. I saw it from 20 feet away and said, "yep, there's the Chelsea". I love the leaves too. It is very easy to distinguish. All the other Lowe's, Home Depots, and Walmarts I went to had nothing but carnosa and a few others I already have. I had one specific plant I was looking for, and felt so lucky to find it today. Yippee!!

I had to start a Hoya growing list to keep track of what I have. After my next order arrives in the next couple days, I'll have 30 Hoyas. Holy cow, how did I get that many already? My husband came down and asked me where all "those plants" came from, haha.

Wow JoBeth! Sounds like you are trying to take top honors away from Renee? I don't know......I've always considered Renee to be the hoya "Queen Bee" on this forum but now I'm having to rethink this...... You know what happens in a bee hive when there are more than one queen! We don't want that!
I'm looking forward to hearing how all yours do and how they perhaps like intermingling with your orchids. They REALLY are great companion plants..........I know.....mine have told me that they like being with each other.......

Nooo Renee is definitely still Queen. I have to actually master and bloom the ones I have and see how they do under the new lights. I can be princess, hahah Renee said she was at the point with Hoyas that she no longer counts them, I can never get to that point with a limited growing space. She can grow them outside year round so she is Queen

Do all Hoyas bloom? I think I may have one (I inherited it from someone else) and now that I see how all these look in photos I'm thinking that might be what my plant is. I have never seen it bloom though and a very slow grower. I will now have to get a pic to post & some feedback!

WOW! That looks grand! Another year and you are going to have a JUNGLE going on there! Some of my plants are always sticking out LONG runners several feet long - must be careful or they will grab you as you walk by!

frosty - yes, I believe they all bloom - if conditions are right they actually grow pretty fast compared to orchids (my experience). If yours is not blooming - it probably isn't getting enough light/water or some other culture. When you post your pic let us know what kind of conditions it is being grown in - maybe someone will have an idea?

Cyndi's little collection

My Hoya collection is super small. I just have two right now. Im forseeing a lot of growing to happen to my collection because of you guys. I finally took all the moss off from around my verigated kerrii, and there were several little roots around it. I am going to pot it up in just regular miracle grow potting soil, but Im wondering should I put it in like a 3 inch pot or keep it small until it grows out of the pot?

My other one, I just got a couple of days ago. Boy is it ever long....

Three long extentions hanging down and I do like the new leaves being pink. My daughter loves that too.

I don't think mine is getting enough light. I keep it in just slightly more light than my philadendrum's... now that I look at these photos & I look at my plant I see they (mine) are sending loooooong shoots without leaves... usually that means "not enough light" in the plant world, no?

It is potted in a light mossy type of soil... very spongy to the feel. I have had it about a year & haven't repotted it... in a small pot now.

Will try to post a pic in a little while.

Your little kerrii is cute - I'd leave it until it gets enough growth that the plant is tipping over the pot all the time with foliage. But potting it up wouldn't probably hurt anything either. My experience is that these plants are very tolerant of pot sizes compared to orchids. I must get a kerrii one day too - very nice.......

Seems like several people from the forum is wanting a Kerrii too. I have always wanted to start a trend. Too bad my nursery that I got it from isnt in the states or everyone could get a kawaii kerrii. I think I got jokes today. I am thinking I may want to move my well established one over to a hanging pot and start some training. I was thinking of doing that or leaving it in that pot (its nice and heavy) and just adding in a really wild trellis that I had my morning glories put up on. I have two different designs to choose from. If I did the hanging basket then I could let it hang, and take a hang down and fill in the pot area some too. I am glad I got the other hoya. My kerri isnt doing too much right now and waiting for it to grow almost makes me wonder if I am doing right.

I got a kerrii with the variegation in the middle of the leaves instead of on the edges. It was on my wishlist, and seeing how cute yours was just pushed me over the edge. Man the leaves on mine are HUGE compared to the other Hoyas I have

On my way home from my parents I stopped at a nursery and bought 3 hoyas.
One was a variegated kerrii, the other had big round leaves and the las has long ones.
We must have all been thinking the same thing with the kerrii.

Good to know I pushed you over the edge since you guys are responsible for pushing me over the edge into the hoya world to begin with. If I hadnt seen the photos that you guys had posted way earlier, then I wouldnt have gotten my verigated kerrii. Now you guys will have me looking for the compacta, because I like how it is curled up like ribbon. I had to get my other hoya after seeing someone selling it in the yardsale site because I am just sitting here wanting my little kerrii to do some growing. Im debating on either putting mine nice long one in either a hanging basket or leaving it in the heavy pot its in and putting up a trellis to hang the long hang downs on. I have one trellis that is like a small tomato cage and one that looks like rounded church window. Ohhh the choices.....

Over here all I usually find easily in the stores is the compacta. I haven't gotten it because at this point I don't like the way it looks. Maybe it will grow on me.

hmm.. I have 2 hoyas as well. When I keep them in shade, they do not bloom as well. But the minute they get loads of light, some of the leaves begin to misbehave and begin to wilt.

Some of the pictures of my orchids and other blooms are in facebook (you may need to sign-in though)

Hi Frostychic,
I just wanted to reassure you that those long leafless shoots are completely normal! That is the quirk of how hoyas grow. New stems are bare and the leaves appear later...you will notice little leaves on the stem that will just get bigger and bigger until the stem is nicely filled out. It sounds lilke your hoya is very happy!
All the best, Carla

I want to thank everyone here for posting the photos & this thread because I always wondered what this plant is that I have but I had no idea what this plant was until this thread!

Thank you!!!

So... am I right? Is mine a Hoya???

I have moved it to a higher light position in the house... hoping for quicker growth, more leaves & perhaps some bloom action!

Yep it's a Hoya, and I agree that the long stems are just the way it grows, the leaves will fill in. In fact, my stems usually develop roots before the leaves even.

As for blooming, I give mine as much light as they can handle, (right now direct early morning sun) and they are covered in flowers right now. - at least the carnosas are. Also I let carnosa dry out in between waterings.

Pretty Hoya Frostychic! Mine have the long stems too, it's one of my favorite parts about the plants, makes them look exotic.

The pictures of your hoyas are all so beautiful! I had no idea that there was such a variety out there. I am going to try to keep my eyes out for Chelsea and the Rope hoyas...I hope I can find them. I thought that I would share a picture of my hoya. I have it growing on a trellis instead of hanging down.

Thank you frostychic! With all your new stems, your gorgeous hoya would be very easy to train on a trellis.

I like the trellis look too. I think that is a total deciding factor for one of my plants. I decided to take the big one I have out of the pot, and check the soil and all in it especally after finding a couple of snails on the leaves. Boy was I ever glad I did. Not only did I find the couple of snails on the leaves, I found 5 or 6 more in the soil. EEK!!, I definately got rid of those buggers. I repotted it, and found out instead of one plant, I had 3 long ones, and 2 smaller ones all in one pot. I repotted two of the longer ones back in that pot, and put the smaller ones in each in their own pots, and one of the longer ones in its own seperate pot as well. At least now I know how old the potting soil is, and just exactly what is in it. went ahead and put the Kerrii in a small pot too and it will just hang out there until it grows roots out the bottom of the pot. I was wondering though from all you guys that have more experience with them than I do. I know if it has put on blooms its on a pendundcles, and you dont cut them. I was wondering if this is a root or an old penduncle?

After looking up close at this plant, I swear I have had one before. It never bloomed for me but then again I didnt know what it was when I had one. I just loved I could cut it and start new shoots everywhere and fill up a pot with green in no time.

Looks like you had a flower and didn't even know it! Time for some more now.......
I was watering my plants last weekend and saw that I had some blooms on my plain green rope (compacta) too, and didn't know they were there! Sneaky litttle things.
I also like how they root so easily and add beautiful foliage to your plant area.......

Cyndi- your photo is of a peduncle, but it should rebloom from that again
