saffron

does anyone have any experience growing it? I know it is a bulbed plant and the sepals are what are harvested but has anyone here actually grown it?

I think you're talking about crocus sativus. It's a fall-blooming crocus, and the red stigmas are what gets harvested. I've got a few in my garden, but didn't harvest any of the stigmas last year. I planted them really late, and didn't expect to see them until this year, but they popped up in December and got snowed on!

I might try a few in a pot to make harvesting them possible for me. Seems like you'd need a pair of tweezers to harvest!

It's a painstaking process...

I keep meaning to buy some bulbs, the plant grows in a wide range of conditions I think it's pointless trying to grow it as a spice unless you have a heck of a lot space to plant up but then I'm probably never going to harvest anything useful off my turmeric either
