I think you're talking about crocus sativus. It's a fall-blooming crocus, and the red stigmas are what gets harvested. I've got a few in my garden, but didn't harvest any of the stigmas last year. I planted them really late, and didn't expect to see them until this year, but they popped up in December and got snowed on!
I might try a few in a pot to make harvesting them possible for me. Seems like you'd need a pair of tweezers to harvest!
