Peace Plant

I've had my peace plant for many many years (10-14yrs). Each year, like clockwork, she sends several beautiful flowers, even through my neglect. I must admit, I often times forget her. After so many years, we've gotten to know each other. This year, after some of her flowers were spent, I cut out the seed pod, removed the seeds from the flower and placed a number of them in moistened sphagum moss. I have no idea what I'm doing. Anyone have any ideas? Have you tried to propagate new plants? If so, give me some tips.

P.S. I had anticipated dividing "Her Majesty" this year, however, after seeing the price of a peace plant in a 12" pot, I decided, nope, she looks just fine! As in Saturday Night Live, "YOU LOOK MARVELOUS DARLING!- JUST MARVELOUS"

This is one of the easiest plants I've ever grown (or neglected). Just need a little info on starting seeds.

they are such forgiving plants. I really need to get one for my lounge room. I might get a couple actually.

LOL - I had to google this and find out what a "peace plant" was! We probably have a half dozen of them spread around the house! LOL One of them is huge in a 16 inch pot. I always just called them white flag plants. I did a little research and a few places claimed it was difficult to grow from seed - suggested division. Another place sounded like it is a piece of cake - so who knows? You'll have to let us know how it goes.

LOL Mike. When I originally posted, it was the year 2007. Now, it's almost 2009! I'm glad I gave up on the notion of starting new plants from seed. I laughed when I read this post and thought, "What was I thinking? Every available space is now taken up with orchids. Where would I put more plants?"

The Peace plants are really easy to care for and tolerate low light levels. Mine is a little sensitive to chlorine so I usually let water sit out overnight. I usually forget to fertilize, sometimes let it dry out too much, haven't changed the soil more than a few times over the years and it just keeps growing and flowering, with or without my attention. Wish my orchids would do the same.

Sharyn, Did your seeds ever take? I've not tried a peace plant. Recently potted a few white bird seeds to try but the squirrels got them. I did succeed with some dancing girl ginger seeds.

Holy Moly $40

lmartiny: No, I gave up on the thought of starting from seed, however, after searching the internet, I'm sorry that I did so, especially after seeing the prices of these babies. A 12-16" pot would be a fortune! These little babies on the net are probably in 6 inch pots for $40

Mike: Take care of those in 16" pots - you have a gold-mine around your yard.

Peace Lily in Basket - Plants - Flowers Fast

Here's an interesting exerpt from: Caring for Peace Lily Plants - March Newsletter - Flower Shop Network
"It's interesting to note that in caring for Peace Lily plants, we are also helping them to care for us! Spathiphyllums were among the top ten plants in the Clean Air Study conducted by NASA, and were shown to be highly effective at removing formaldehyde, benzine, and carbon monoxide from the air, thus fighting "Sick Building Syndrome".

Thanks Sharyn, maybe I'll try it. All of mine are in a bed in the back yard. All ones that pooped out in the patio and were were put out there to either do or die. They are fine though. We have one of the larger varieties in the patio. Also a small division of a very large one that eventually succumed. It is coming back nicely.
I haven't priced them, but I'm sure you can get a peace lily at HD or Lowes for much less. (and just get your own basket)
I can't do well with plants inside. They get neglected. I only have the hardiest of ones. Cast iron and ZZ. Low light and low water needs.

Hehehe! I had to look it up too. Thought it was a succulent. I've seen these Peace Lily plants all over the place here. They are very nice house plants and the leaves are nice too. Never actually grown one myself though.
