What other plants do you have in your collection?

Growing orchids is my favorite hobby, but I also have passion now for these beautiful plants Hoyas!
What other plants do you have in your collection. Let's share some stories and pics.
My story started here in Orchidgeeks, I saw some pics of Hoyas from another geek and was madly in love. I don't remember from whom the post was but was love at first sight I order some cuts on ebay and then I saw some in an orchid show and a new addiction has started Now I have more than 20 Hoyas

So lovely, especially the last one with the butterfly!

I grow a large variety of plants. Here is my epiphyllum oxypetalum that refuses to bloom:

Moss roses during summer:

Christmas cactus:

Looks delicious, but not edible...it's the Christmas cherry.

I'll find more pics later!

Ysa, I have several bromeliads including my all-time favorite, the King of Bromeliads, Vriesea hieroglyphica. http://fcbs.org/images/Vriesea/V012.jpg It took me over 20 years to learn how to grow one successfully to flower, and I DID IT!. These grow along with orchids as epiphytes.

I also LOVE Calathea makoyana. http://toptropicals.com/pics/garden/...coyana023a.jpg AND http://toptropicals.com/pics/garden/...akoyana833.jpg It is commonly seen in your better botanic garden exhibits. I had two outstanding plants which were recently ravaged by spider mites. I'm prepared for the NEXT time! These grow beneath epiphytic orchids as terrestrials.

I have a hoya and a christmas cactus that have both been in my MIL's care and therefore never flower. Other than that it is mainly outside plants which will undoubtedly get photographed and posted next year.

I want to know how you manage to get the butterflies to cooperate for your pictures, Ysa!?!

G'Day Ysa

We have a large variety of plants growing however one that may be of interest is the Pitcher Plant (Nepenthes). This is another one I never seem to have to do anything with, as it lives outside on trellis nature seems to look after it.

The Jacaranda is also out in flower down the paddock.

Cheers
Bernie

The 5th pic, the one with all the rust/red is remarkable. I've never seen a hoya like that before.

As for me, I'm such a complete orchid geek that I only have 3 plants which are not orchids. I have 3 cyclamen. They didn't do so good this year. They only kind of flowered small this year. I think I do better with orchids.

The Christmas Cherry is very cool. I have a few Hoyas and a lip stick. They root very easily. I try all sorts of seeds and cuttings. I've found the hoyas to root easily.

My plant collection is verging on ridiculous (all grown in my sunroom).
I think I need to donate some..

I've got a wollemi pine (very cool species: link), a lime tree, norfolk pine (x2, one of which is about 6' tall), a gardenia, bay laurel and lots of generic houseplants (anthurium, schefflera, fittonia, spider plants and etc.)

Indoors or outdoors?

I've only got a few other plants indoors: four African violets; a geranium I'm going to try to propogate for outside use next summer; herbs (basil, parsley, rosemary, thyme, chives); 3 cacti (one from when I was in highschool); two bamboo plants; and two spider plants (thanks, Lynne!) that survive despite my regularly forgetting to water them.

The outside list is much longer!

i have 5 thanksgiving cactuses, which i am threatening to throw out in the snowbank real soon if they don't bloom. it is, after all, LESS THAN A WEEK TILL THANKSGIVING. and only one is blooming right now. they're being turds this year. bloomed like crazy last year. i dunno what more they want.

i also have a couple small succulents which i am on the verge of killing (the poor things), a couple dracaena/lucky bamboo, an african violet, and am currently trying to grow an amaryllis to bloom by xmas. we'll see if it cooperates.

I have lived in my new apartment for almost 1 year now, and I have managed to fill my patio and living area quite nicely with an assortment of plants... besides my 50+ different orchids

Inside I have 2 types of Croton, a Money Tree, 5 Philodendron type houseplants, some small palms, and a Zambia.

Outside I have 3 kinds of Guava (Strawberry, Lemon, and a dwarf) 3 dwarf banana plants, Serrano and Habinero Chile plants, Strawberries, 3 types of Lavender, and an assortment of other herbs. 3 types of Jasmine (Night blooming, Arabian, Yellow Jasmine), White, and edible Ginger. I also have an assortment of Cacti and Succulents.

Now after seeing those beautiful Hoya blooms, I think I am going to have to find room for at least one of those!

The orchids have successfully pushed out the majority of my other houseplants...all but my favs are either in new homes or now live at my husband's office.

What's left here? A modest collection of succulents/cacti...including a snake plant that flowered for me this year. 3 different pitchers. A variety of Tillandsia. Orchid cactus (epiphyllum). 3 Rhipsalis species. Lastly, (I think) a Hatiora that hopefully will give me a big bloom this year.

I won't even start on what I have growing outside except to mention that I just boxed up my tuberose for winter storage. This is my absolute favorite Summer tuber/flower.

I forgot to list my philidendrons, african violets, a jade plant and what I know as Mother in law tongues. Outside there are lilies, iris, hostas by the butt load, hibiscus, yucca, moss rose, creeping phlox, marigolds, petunia, holly hocks, hydrangea, mums, tulips, hyacinth, grape hyacinth, black-eyed susan, liatris, cone flower, bee balm, and several I either don't know the name of or forgot to mention. By the way, I have an aunt that grows african violets like weeds. She is at the point of thinking of throwing some of the new babies out. If anyone wants some I can ask her if she would like to share next year. Getting to cold to ship here.

My orchids recieve most of my attention and if I had better light I would grow more cacti and succulents. I have a few African violets, a trailing african violet, goldfish plant (nematanthus), crotons, ardesia red, joseph's coat, two types of peperomia, purple heart, kalanchoes, jade, staghorn (elkhorn) fern, dracnea, snake plants, philodendrons, euphorbia milii (crown of thorns), 2 hoyas (haven't bloomed one yet), bromeliads, bolivian jew, aloe, schefflera, peacock fern, rabbits foot fern, lemon button fern, aquarium plants, pothos and some kyoto grass (it was labeled aquarium plant but I guess it's not).

I've tried but, I kill every begonia that comes near me and bonsai. I would love to get a maidenhair fern, more gesneriads, tillansdias and some cacti. I love terrariums but I only have made a little one so far.

This trailing african violet is so easy I love it.

I don't have too many houseplants as the cats devour them. but 5 years ago, I bought a jasmine plant that was maybe 2ft tall. It is easily double that now and is in a large glazed pot that my husband has to haul outside for the summer and back in for winter. Too heavy for me now. but when it blooms in the summer the scent comes into the house and smells so delicious. I also have a pony tail palm that the cats eat, it regrows, cats eat it again, etc. I also have a planter my girlfriends gave me almost 3 years ago when I was diagnosed with kidney cancer and had a kidney removed. No clue what the plants in it are, but they thrive with minimal care. Outdoors i have a large yard with a wide variety of plants that range from common to a bit more uncommon. I am always tucking new plants in here and there.

Well, alongside the orchids, I have many Anthuriums in red and white, along with peace lillies, and bromeliads. These all like such similar conditions to orchids that its easy to maintain them all and they make a nice show bundled together for texture and effect when the orchids bloom.

I also have several money trees, amaryllis and aloe vera which I regularly split for new homes. The amaryllis was brought whilst on honeymoon 14yr ago and is still thriving and throwing off new bulb babies.

I'm also quite keen when it comes to propagating plants from cuttings for the garden, so there's usually something in a pot to root in a window here and there.

I am lucky, we have 33 windows in our home! Before you get excited, I don't live in a mansion. It's an old 1800's crofters cottage, so there are as many as three and four windows to a room.

I used to have these too. They don't like to be turned or moved when the buds are developing. The buds will always turn towards the light as they emerge (an you may not have even seen the buds at this stage), so if you move the plant around according to the light maybe in the hope of making an more even looking growth, the buds turn too so twist themselves off and die before emerging.

So place the plant and leave it in exactly the same position at all times as best you can. Then you should have a happy bloomer.

Hope this helps.

I found myself with way too many plants in the past two years or so. I think you might like couple of them.
Here is a very interesting cacti (I think). His name is Kalanchoe 'Desert Surprise'.
What other plants do you have in your collection?-100_5438.jpg

What other plants do you have in your collection?-100_5439.jpg
He was outside the whole summer long (neglected...) and didn't like it there (I think). His buds never opened up. But he is pushing new buds since I took him inside, and from the same spikes (branches).... The flowers should be lavender color. I hope to see them soon. But don't you think his leaves look almost like Psychopsis Mendenhall's...?
What other plants do you have in your collection?-100_5440.jpg

And this one is getting out of control. It's a Zyggo cactus, but the reason I like him is because he is a very unusual color, almost salmon color.

I'll be happy to send you a cutting of this one if you want one. Just let me know.
Well, and ofcourse my 'Lipstick Plant' (I posted earlier). The tubes on that one are much bigger and I can see the lipstick forming inside....
I'll post his pictures when it blooms.

I also just bought my mother a christmas cactus for christmas. haha. Love the pics of everyones in bloom. The I got her has tons of buds and I can't wait to give it to her os she can enjoy the flowers.

I have a variegated hoya that hangs in the kitchen and tickles the dogs in their bed underneath it. I have wound it around the top a few times and imagine it would be about 10 or 12 feet long if I unwound it! I've got a few pathos that long as well. I also have a lot of African Violets that I've grown for about 40 years, including one that is about 20 years old, some cactus and succulents, a few draceneas and philodendrons which are quite tall and wide...some relatives say there would be room for 5 or 10 more people in the dining room for dinner without some of the plants...who needs more than 10 relatives tho? Plus usually they smell better! Outside, my "yard" is garden, with hardly a blade of grass...Azaleas and rhododendrons, lots of iris and lilies and about 30 different dahlias I dig out of the ground and save the bulbs every winter and re-plant in the spring...Lots of phlox and Rudbeckias and Coreopsis and you name it, with herbs and peppers and some eggplants thrown in.
Those of you who cruise EBay have probably seen Epiphyllum, orchid cactus. I have a bunch of those. One I got from my mother about 15 years ago that has a fabulous 6-7" multi-petaled bloom, deep red, and all the rest are from EBay and are growing like weeds but haven't bloomed yet.

I have a collection of broms (gone a little brom crazy lately) I did have a Vreisia heiroglyphica, but just discovered it had rotted off. Very disappointed!! (especially since I paid $30 for it only a couple of months ago). It was beautiful. Wondering what I have done to it?

Succulents- heaps of cactuses, zygos and anything else that has caught my eye.

Hoyas- seven. Would like some more, but trying to get bigger ones that are on offer at Bunnings.

Anthuriums- about 20 including scherzerianum(sp) and a purple one.

Fruit trees- we have about 25 (maybe more) varieties in the yard. Just been checking the fruit on the avocados and fuji.

And plants, plants and more plants!!! Drives my husband crazy!!

I have a few miscellaneous foliage plants hanging around but I have this pineapple that I've been growing from a top taken from a grocery variety 2 years ago and it has finally decided to bear fruit.

What other plants do you have in your collection?-pineapple1.jpg

I've done this once before. The fragrance and taste are beyond words but 2 years? Not likely again!

Mitch, I also have a pineapple growing from the top of a store bought one, I think it is going on 3 years and no sign of fruiting, oh well.

How can I forget my Plumerias!?! I have 4 different ones, a white with yellow center, a pinkey red, a pinkey orange, and a mystery one I grew from a cutting I found discarded that hasn't flowered yet.

My other plants...

Most of my gardening happens outside, where I keep 2 large flowerbeds and a million pots. I also have about 60 houseplants--some are generic and some I don't know the official name of. My favorite right now is a black bat flower I've coaxed into staying alive for about 6 months now. I think he's supposed to bloom in January and if he does, I'll definitely be posting pictures.

Here are some pictures of my stuff from flowerbeds--mostly hybrid versions of standards.

I think in order: coreopsis & iceplant; foxglove; nasturtium; monkeyflower; penstemon; violas & lavender.

***Every spring I end up with a million leftover seeds as I plan my garden--if anyone's interested in being mailed free seeds of various stuff, let me know and I can email you an "available list" when time gets closer. ***

Wow. Nice plants. A cutting cornocopia.
We tend to pick up bromeliads and gingers. Also succulents and funky begonias. Anything funky actually.
I had varied colors of Plumeria and am still nursing them back from last years freeze. Lost several.

Does it smell a little off?

Ysanabria - it's definitely a Stapelia. Very cool! I bought 3 of these a few months ago. I hear the flowers are kind of stinky.

Your collections are all very cool. Now don't laugh at me, I kill everything but the orchids. I have a fern that is on its last legs and I can't tell you how many plants I've killed or given away because I was killing them. I'm so not having a green thumb.

Phalaephea - I have a soft spot for Penstemons too and have four at the moment. By far my favourite Penstemon is one that I already have, P.digitalis "Huskers Red" (below)

i have a black thumb too, but can't kill my thanksgiving cactuses. have you tried them (or xmas cactuses)? mine grow like weeds and bloom so lovely in the wintertime. if you want, i could probably spare a couple cuttings off mine this spring.

My mother had a Stapelia the same as yours. It did stink.

I have Stapelia flavopurpuria. When I ordered it from Miles' To Go - Cacti & Succulents it came with lots of little flowers already in bloom. But being bare rooted it did not like the shock and all my pretty flowers dropped of immediately. They were ever so pretty. It is one of my cacti that love me and is growing very well. Actually I do a lot better with cacti than orchids. But the bug bit me too hard to quit.

Here is a link from the web.

A lot of the plants y'all are mentioning are in my collection, too... of course, the orchids, and also indoors I have a number of Xmas/Thanksgiving cacti (fuschia, red, and white blooms - all blooming now). Also have birds-nest fern, hoyas, rubber trees, pepperomia, and a giant peace lily. The peace lily is about 6 years old, and I've tried to kill it repeatedly - the dang thing won't give up

Outdoors, my favorites are penstemon and daylilies. I have about a dozen penstemons, and probably 60-70 daylilies, including some that I "created" myself by crossing named hybrids and growing out the seeds. Here's a photo of one of my creations (I have a soft spot for the spider types).

Another fun outdoor plant is the contorted filbert, AKA Harry Lauder's Walking Stick.

Like some others have said, my orchids have pushed out most of my other house plants! I have a huge Peace Lily, an african violet, a Thanksgiving cactus and a spring cactus, a gloxenia, thanks to Renee a couple of hoyas, and a couple of green plants I don't know the names of! I also have a couple of plumeria that refuse to bloom for me.
Outside I have a lot of different plants. My roses are my favorite. I would collect them like I do orchids, but I'm out of room and they take a good bit of work to plant! I also don't have enough time to tend what I do have or I would have more of everything green!!!
