ID this smelly purple flower?

What is this? I went shopping at a Lowes with my mum recently and we both bought nice wire baskets (for two bucks each) just full of these dark dark purple with almost black centers flowers. Her basket also had a few bright pink ones too. These flowers have a sweet cinnamony smell if cinnamon was mixed with a good musk. The scent gets stronger at night to the point I can smell them when the window is open.

The growth is medium green and trailing. Thick leaves and it likes full sun.

What is it

Looks like a petunia. They're easy to grow, like lots of sun, and should tolerate dryness/heat. I like that deep purple color!

It is! Thanks!

Argh.... now I feel silly. This is what happens when one is raised by the black thumbed... one never learns the common garden flowers!

Good to know they are easy to grow. maybe mum's will stand half a chance.

oh poo, my mom had a couple baskets full of this stuff last year. we never did find the name of it, i don't think. actually, what size are the flowers? 3 inches or so across makes it a petunia, 1 inch or smaller makes it something else. i can ask my mom if she ever found out what they were.

It's definitely a petunia. They come in big/big flowers, smaller flowers, uprights, trailing, and a really vigorous, newer variety usually associated w/the name New Wave. Hummers love petunias!

Based on the trailing description...as well as the fact that it's sold in a basket...I'm guessing it's one of the New Wave or New Wave type varieties. That would be my guess anyway. If you find it getting leggy...pinch the ends back and it'll fill out better. I've found that baskets...if started early in the season...tend to get a big leggy...pinching back usually solves that issue.

Yup, big three inch plus blooms. They have a lovely strong smell too. Glad to learn hummers love them. I love hummers! (the birds, not that earth killing vanity symbol of an SUV) LOL

I pinched it pretty hard already. Some of the growth had gotten scraggly at the store.. hence the discount.
