Hoya serpens

I've mentioned a couple times that Hoyas are my second love. I would have more if I had the room for them, but since the orchids take up so much room, I've only got about 10 - 15 Hoyas.

Anyways, I've had Hoya serpens for years now, and it never bloomed, in fact it barely grew, kind of just sat there. This past winter, I left it outside until the nights got down to 35F - and I guess it liked it, It has bloomed! And is now growing as well.

And since I was posting about other plants, I figured I'd include a couple shots of the Magnolia tree in the back yard.

Adorable!! I have one too, and it has done barely anything since I got it.
What do you have yours potted in? I'm trying to find hanging pots for my hoya serpena and hoya cummingiana, which the cummingiana has no issues growing for me.

JoBeth, it's potted in seedling orchid mix, fine bark, a little peat and small perlite.

I don't have cummingiana - lucky you!

My other hoyas have all been grown from cuttings, have had them about a year and a half now, actually they all need repotted, and I'll use the seedling bark for them too. Right now they are all in a peat/perlite mix, but only 3 - 4 in clear pots.

Except for lacunosa, I had a lot of trouble with that one, so I took the one small remaining green piece and stuck it in S/H. It has started to grow, so hoping it takes off in there.

When I go to repot the rest of them, I'm going to try to start some pieces in s/h, will have to see how they do.

I'll send you a cutting of my cummingiana when it gets a bit bigger. I think I will try repotting my two hoyas in the kind of mix you are using. Do you keep the serpens moist, or let it dry between waterings?

JoBeth, um kind of embarassing, but not really sure. In the winter it was getting watered maybe once a week, right now, it's getting watered every sunny day.

Because of the way it's grown over the pot, and I'm reluctant to stick my finger in there, cause it's outside, and I'm afraid I'll touch a bug. Yes I'm a big baby when it comes to bugs.

The other Hoyas, some like to be evenly moist, and some like to dry out, and since they are more vining/climbers, it's easier to tell when the mix is dry. I do use clear pots, but for the top heavy ones, I set the pot inside a clay pot for stability. But I just grab the stem of the plant and pull it up out of the clay pot to check. They are so root bound right now, the clear pot comes up with the plant.

Let me know and I'll send you some cuttings as well.

As for fertilizing, I throw a bit of nutricote in the pot every 6 months or so.

That's really it.

I've got a couple of Hoyas. I just went and grabbed the tag and it is a cummingiana 'Little Leaf' Solay/Cindy sent me last year. It was a single cutting and I finally got brave enough to cut it and root the top piece and it seems to be fine. The other one is the curly leafed, verigated type, also called Hundu Rope. I bought three small ones and potted them in a hanging basket about two years ago. It has never flowered and is about to touch the ground it has grown so long. It is a bit beat up with holes in many leaves. I don't know if is too dry or if someone likes to munch on it. It needs work. I'll give it a clip and see if I can root pieces. You guys are welcome to a cutting if you want it. But it is a noid.
Selby gardens has Hoyas growing up trees. It was very cool.

Nice!! I have several Hoyas as well! The blooms just amaze me! When I show them to friends, they can't believe that they're real! I have a miniature one that Solay sent me last year that's about to bloom! I'm so excited!

Your photos are awesome! I love your Magnolia tree, too! Someday I'll have a "real" yard!! Thanks for sharing!

My Hoya fungii just bloomed for the first time, I received this as a cutting about a year and a half ago.

First the buds, then the blooms, then the whole plant.

I like it very much. I love magnolia trees. Hubby got me one for mothers day several years ago and unfortunately it was hit by lightning. I would love to replace it one day.
