Spanish moss with tiny flowers!!! :)

I used a lot of Spanish moss in my orchids speacially vandas and my mount babys! But I have never seen it flower and what a beautiful surprise to see the beauty of its delicate blossom.
I guess if it produces flowers is not a truly moss at all?!?

Thanks, I haven't seen that happen before. I guess it makes sense that these would have some blooms, amazing. Has anyone else seen this before?

You've done very well, keep an eye on the old flowers they might continue on and become seed pods if the flower was pollinated.

It real name is Tillandsia usneoides and is part of the Bromeliad family.

Spanish Moss, Old Man's Beard are two common names that spring to mind.

Wow, aren't you a clever little bunny! Well done ysanabria! What's your secret?

I have some in my new terrarium and a bunch I have left over is just hanging on another plant. I don't know why but I never thought of them as a flowering plant. Duh!!! How dumb am I then, how else were they to multiply.

I guess that comes from the fact that its not planted in a pot and you dont really need to do anything to the little plant. Hmm maybe I better find a fact/grow sheet.

Spanish moss with tiny flowers!!! :)-tillandsia-usneoides.jpg

Your last photo shows the opened seed pods, that's great, I never thought to take a photo of them.

Grab some it reproduces very quickly! They like the same conditions as the orchis plus the fertilizer helps!

Just a quick reminder that when you get the moss from trees be cautious because they harbor many insects..........especially spiders!!!, many critters you would not want around your orchids.

Actually, the idea that spanish moss harbors chiggers and/or mites is a bit of a myth. You might find a spider or two in them, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Had I seen this thread when the moss was blooming, I would've encouraged you to smell the flowers at night...they are night-fragrant, with a smell kinda like Epidendrum magnoliae and Habenaria repens.

Debra, you don't have moss there in Alabama?
We've got too much. I don't use it for anything. Or maybe here and there for a quick decorative touch in the base of a pot for a party or something. Or a halloween thing. Otherwise we pull it down and throw it out.

Hi,
I don't have any spanish moss but if I buy the dried bag of it does it come back to life and bloom or do you have to get it fresh? I'd really like to get some of this moss for my new Vandas I just got this week from oakhillgardens.com.
Thanks

I don't think the packaged stuff would revitalize. I just threw out a bunch that fell from trees. (one with a good sized limb attached) I'd be happy to send you some. I'm sure I can round up some more. Just PM me.

Lynne, I'd like some too if you don't mind sending me some. I think the green flowers are pretty and we don't have live Spanish moss around here. Of course I'll pay for the postage.

I could not believe my eyes when my spanish moss developed flowers just like yours has, last year. Really tiny and very green in colour, but have not had any so far this year. But I shall keep looking and waiting

Yes it's a bromeliad. It flowers making it an angiosperm. They are all over Florida and the SE. Pretty much anywhere you see Live Oaks or Cypress you will find them. The flowers are so tiny most people don't spot them. That was a really good picture you took of it.

If anyone is still interested in getting rid of some of their moss, I would gladly pay shipping to get it off of your hands. I would love to have some to add to pots, etc. I am hoping to soon get a greenhouse and would love to have it dangling here and there.
