| What a beautiful plant, LeftCoastAngler. Don't they bloom year-round in warmer climates? Thanks.

But further South, say in like the Keys, or even PuertoRico they may just flower year round... There are some strains though that do thrive year round and won't shed any leaves... ~LCA. |

| It's gonna be cold here in SWFL tonight! In the 40s fer my area... Brrrrr... Just got done covering tropicals with sheets and blankies... Frost Warnings for the StrawBerryGrowers... Sprinklers will be on 'em all night... ![]() |
| ||||
| Would 40F adversely affect your plumerias? I hope the cold is just a passing thing. We were down to -15C (5F) a couple of days ago but have begun to warm up. Next Monday we will be up to 6C (43F): and the following Thursday we will be again down to about -17C (>1F). We will survive these fluctuations, heheehehehe Good luck with protecting your plants. I hope they will be alright tomorrow.

| Look what the 30degree freezing two nights did last week to my 'ScottPratt' red: ~LCA. ![]() ![]() |

| I am so sorry about what happened to it. Would it help to cut off the frost-bitten area and apply some thing to prevent dehydration? I am sure it will survive. Good luck.

| I've heard different methods about that, Some sat cut it to good wood at a slant. Let it dry a day or so and put latex caulk to seal. Some say let it dry up naturally and it will fall off and branch.I usually leave it alone till it falls off unless I see signs of spreading, in which case I cut immediatly. Gladys PS. Sorry about your plant. I feel your pain! |
| ||||
| Remember waaaay back when on page 2 when I put those branches in water to root? I ended up with 5 in all. Well they are still there. They have't rotted , and they haven't rooted! I had such a horrible year with rooting last year . Now it is January. February is our winter month! I don't know what to do. Leave them, pot them, or take them out and store them till spring and start over? I am becoming so discouraged. I used toroot these things with no problem at all. Now I have 2 more 18" to 24" limbs that I ha to remove from my large plant yesterday because the high winds we've been having we're brushing them against the fence.I was afraid they would break off and I wouldn't fnd them. I'm just going to send them to Florida colors I think?( I'm a little stubborn) But PLEASE what to do with the ones in water for forever? I can't afford to send them all off. I'm still not workingand that wouldn't be fair to DH tho he'd never say a word, I'd feel guilty as all heck! Any ideas? Tanks, Gladys |

| LCA, you are so right! But as I said I had a horrible year rooying plummies. I have more cuttings now. I just packed them in perlite til spring. They,ve got me running scared now. So many lost last year. You think I should pot up the ones still in water? They are still goood and firm cuttings. got cottage cheese nubs once then the just went away. The cuttings are still good tho. Should I just pot up now and keep under lights til warm weather. Like I said, I have been having horrible luck with these this year. I just dont understand. It's usually so easy for me. I thought of just storing in perlite til spring. I can't make up my mind what to do. And one is my only cutting of the plastic pink.If someone could help me save these I would gladly send you a cutting of it and my NOID yellow and white! I'm just desperate and worried about them! They've been in water in the sun since summer! Thats a long time! Too many decisions. I need to do something tho! Gladys Last edited by Gladys47; 01-19-2008 at 10:09 AM. |

| I personally, myself wouldn't continue water rooting, or whatever you've been doing... These plants are succulents, thus their water retention levels are high amongst the stalks and branches... In the wild these trees are very drought tolerant, and require almost no watering. I'd just stick them sticks in some un fert'd soil! What would be even better would be a grow light type fixture or something. I used a 150watt outdoor light and it worked like magic. I had noticable roots in 2 weeks! Just left it in the garage on a timer for 18 hours on 6 hours off... Didn't notice it at all on my electric bill. ~LCA.

| I had to whack my ScottPratt. The two damaged branches went further down, so I had to cut it off at the pass... After the cut I could clearly tell it was a gone'r. There was no 'meat' in the branches. I guess rotted away? I dunno. Super soft, unlike the hardwood type feel of a healthy one... I wonder what it'll look like next Spring... ![]() ~LCA.

| Wow, those look wonderfully healthy! I love them as well. I have them all over my yard. I wasn't here when you got the frost bite and since this thread is so long I didn't read each reply, but if it should happen again and depending on how large the 'stalk' is, you can always take a center cut, as long as its clean and you mark it some how to make sure the right end goes in the ground. It sells for such a high price - and I don't know why. and I am always cutting mine back. I know peeps at work who want it so when I'm trimming and taking large branches off, I cut them to abpit 14 -16in cuttings, making sure (when I am taking a center cut) that it is marked which end goes in the ground/which end is up. I don't root them at all. I stick them in the ground either the raw cutting or a healed one and leave it alone. It does find all by itself. Recently I did some trimming on my plumeria about 3 weeks ago. I wanted to get them cleaned up before they wake up, altho you can cut them at any time. I have a couple different kinds, so as I cut them I lay them at the base of the trunk so not to mix them up. I gave most of the nice pieces away and had not decided if I was going to keep a few (not so nice looking) stalks that remained. They are just laying on top of the mulch waiting for me to decide something. Going out there last week, I noticed two of the stalks are flowering -- no leaves yet, but I sure have the flowers. The darn thing is acting like an air plant. Who knew? That one took the cake for me. |

| Those little stumps are expensive here too. But more than that they are very hard to come by. Mine are showing some new growth after almost 6 months of inactivity. The outside temperature is still low and at nights is still below 5C (40F). They are all still inside. I think it will be wonderful to stand under a tree when it is in bloom. The fragrance will be overwhelming , I guess.
