Those are so pretty. The third pic. blooms has markings that remind me of peacock feathers. Really neat. The pool is gorgeous and the water plants all look so healthy in it.

Jim are all of your plants hardy or are some of them tropical and must be replaced or stored for the winter? I only have two hardy water lilies that stay in the pond and a basket of Japanese iris that must come out. Brooke |

Hi Guys.. Thanks for the nice compliments, to answer a few ?s most of the plants are hardy, lotus, lillies, pickerel, the water hyacinth is not I have to buy that each spring. The pond is 16' x 10' about 24" deep w/ some shelves, about 1800 gals. Now I would not build a pond like this again because like an orchid collection if I want add on, move it, make it deeper, change in any way I can't because of the way I designed it, unless I had a few more $$$$$. Now don't tell my wife I said that, I'll deny it. Here are few more pics the pond and yard..... Jim.

Beautiful Jim!!! I'm very surprised many of them can survive a Chicago winter. You just leave them in the pond, even though it will freeze???

Love your garden pond. It will not hurt what he has in the pond to freeze. Winter is the dormant stage for most of thesepond plants. They need this dormant time to reproduce new growth and new flowers for the next season. Now if he has koi in his pond he probally brings those inside. My mom has a garden pond and she leaves her water lilies and arrowhead in year round. She cannot put any fish in her pond as it is illegal in the state of Maine. Their afraid a koi or goldfish will be captured by some heron and be realeased into the rivers and streams and multiply hurting trout and salmon fishing. Just to give you guys an idea on how anal retentive the state of Maine is. There is a chinese resturant in Augusta and he has 55 gal aquarium with koi. If I remember right he had some butterfly koi, too. The state went in and confiscated the koi, as they are illegal in Maine, but from what I understand the koi is part of the chinese/oriental religion/beliefs. This man had to go to court and fight to get his fish back and he had to put a paddlock on the aquarium so the fish wouldn't jump out and get into the rivers and streams. And if the courts would have found in the state's favor, the fish would have been destroyed. |

| Hi Jim, lovely array of flowers in in your pond. I have only got dragonfly larvae in mine and the odd tadpole which has escaped being lunch for the d'flies. Thanks for sharing your pond. Bill |

Well believe it or not, the pond is home to 6 Koi and about 20 or so Shubunkin goldfish, they stay in the pond all winter without any problem as long as I give them a place to hide and I keep a small hole in the ice for any gas to escape, I do that with a small pump and a little heater, once water temp goes down to 55f they stop eating and go semidorment until spring, it's amazing to watch...... Jim.

Jim and Sunshine - Thanks for the education!! I would never have guessed the fish or plants could survive a freezing winter. Koi ponds in backyards are extremely popular here so I guess I had the impression they were more suited for tropical climates. Nature never ceases to amaze me!!
