More KY Garden Scenes

Now for some of the shade areas to cool you off

More shade but with the daylily seedling patch on the right - these are non-registered daylily we hybridized.

More shade to keep you cool

This is looking from the back shade bed to the front of the property

One last bed as you walk back up the slight hill. The problem is at my age and you are hot and tired, the hill isn't so slight anymore

I hope you enjoyed the tour.

Hopefully you have a tractor mower or a few dozen cows to trim that grass!

Thanks everyone - hope you're not too warm now you have walked the property

Synda yes we have tractors to mow the lawn and the fields. My husband keeps the fields mowed too because I don't get along very well with snakes and the open fields discourage them from coming into the yard

Solay the mower of the grass will never be me

Do they really have blue grass in KY? Or do you have to have a few KY burbons to make the grass look blue?

Daylillies are the greatest. Tough as nails and will grow anywhere even if neglected

I have a double daylily and will have too see if I can find the pic. Have a
Prairie Blue Eyes that is going to need dividing and also have a daylily that
is coral colored and is suppose to be a repeat bloomer.

Brooke, very lovely well cared for gardens

Pretty yard. Looks like a lot to take care of. I love the Hostas. They petered out down here after a couple of years.

I agree Sunshine daylilies are one of the toughest perennials you can grow. They can grow from the deep south to the frozen tundra.

Imartiny yes hostas can't survive in FL - they must have a dormant period or they do as you said, peter out after a couple of years.

Day lilies are beautiful but perennial day lilies do not grow in Florida. The hotter shorter winter prevents the dormant period from being sufficient to refresh the plant and they disappear in a year or two.

Evergreen day lilies that do not go dormant are what is needed in Florida. I have 12 varieties now and looking for more.

You live in the state that hybridizes the best daylilies in the world - I'm sure if you look you can find one or two or fifty daylily growers. Try Frank Smith - not only is he well known in orchids but quite good at the daylily thing too.

Start here Frank Smith Daylilies... Daylilies Of Distinction

If Frank doesn't have anything that tickles your fancy then you can contact any of these folk and they can tell you other places, many on-line where you can spend your money. AHS Region 12

Everything in FL will be either evergreen or semi-evergreen and will thrive in your garden because they don't sell dormants in FL. Guard your wallet though, some can be quite expensive.

I just learned something new! I didn't know there was an evergreen lily. Then again, I live in an area where the only evergreen plants are pines, spruce, firs, etc. BRRRRR. LOL!

Kat, that's what I should have bought but I didn't know there were ever and semi-evergreeen day lilies back then and I planted dormant ones. I would hate to have to toss them out to replace them all now.

Brooke, thanks for the site. Might have to get a few more.

In KY my evergreen daylilies are definitely NOT evergreen. They disappear into the ground just like my other perennials when ol' man winter shows up. Most people can grow both types of daylilies but FL isn't that lucky but there are a few thousand evergreen daylilies they can grow. They are also lucky their growing season is so much longer than up here because they get rebloom. Up here, rebloom is hit and miss but mostly miss

Here is a link for anyone who might be interested in adding daylilies to their gardens.

Charlotte's Daylily Diary

Solay there are a couple of very good hybridizers in CA and I think they are located in your area. A road trip to a daylily nursery during peak bloom can be dangerous
