Calla Lilies

Does anyone know about calla lilies? I'm just starting to grow them?

hi, beads. welcome to the board. as I just told eastonartist, please introduce yourself in the introductions forum.
Calla lilies are not orchids (and not really lilies, either). they're aroids of the genus Zantedeschia. I water mine every once in a while, and they spread all over the place. they die back when they're done blooming, but stay as bulbs underground until the next spring. if you have any more questions about them, please post them in the Other Plants forum.
you can also searching the web for a forum dedicated to aroids. there are many collectors who will be glad to help answer any questions you might have.

I have a big pot full of dwarf canna's that I love and this is what I've learned growing them: Once the flowers are done on each growth I cut it back to the dirt, water as often as they need it and let 'em go a little dormant during the winter. Cut back on water and fertilizer in the cold months. When spring rolls around I chop out all of last years growth and get it back on a good all purpose fert. I like miracle-gro tomato fertilizer.

Plucky, the tips about Cannas are much appreciated. I've been planning on planting some myself. but I should point out that Calla Lilies are totally unrelated to Cannas, and require different care.

Janet, I don't think you can overwater Callas.

oh good.

cannas are quite nice too--last year the national gallery in DC had these REALLY cool ones planted--they were orange and red on the same flower. very pretty.

Duh! I feel so silly! Calla, not canna! That's what I get for reading too quick...

I use to have the pink ones growing but I must have tossed them out cause they aren't around in the yard now. I do think they are pretty though.
