Bloomer from Hybrid List!

Well, I can't say my "Naples" is blooming, but at least I DO have another phal blooming that I got from Jerry on the same order that started out about the same size! Here is Phalaenopsis Brother Buddha X Brother Pumpkin. Still a young plant - I considered removing the spike when I saw it, but since I had not actually seen what the bloom looked like yet I let it go - nice! Don't you think?

Mike it looks really good, I like the coloring and the spots. I have one comment though, on the inside of the lip, is that white spot a bug? I kind of looks like the one you found hanging out in your Onc. Could just be my eyes playing tricks. If it is, have fun teaching it to play dead lol.

EXCELLENT eye Brookn! I was so mesmerized by the bloom itself that I didn't even look at that little detail. Those little buggers keep popping up here and there when I least expect it. Hadn't seen one for a few weeks now and now it looks like I start the countdown all over again. Hmm. Another spray with Bayer Rose and Flower too!
Yup. This one "plays" dead just as good as the other one.
Fortunately for me they only play the "game" ONCE. They are poor losers.

Very nice Mike! I got one of these too from Jerry, however mine isn't fairing as well as yours. I got 2 and both of them seem very stunted or something. I repotted them in the coir mix and it doesn't seem like it matters either way what they're in. The only thing they've done so far is drop leaves left and right. I'm not even sure if they're sprouting new roots since I put it in coir, however recently one of them is growing a new leaf...very slowly however. I guess I'll just have to wait and see.

Ah well, I always get mites, no mealys, but I did find scale all over a huge tree in the backyard. No idea what to do, glad the chids are well away from it. Funny it's only on that one stupid tree.

Button, my P. Sogo Grape appears to have gone dormant on me. New roots, but no new leaves. It just looks plastic. Maybe the one that you and Mike have like more light, maybe a little more would jump start it.

Very nice flower, Mike. I got that same cross from Jerry and I was not too sure what the flower looked like. Now I know. Thanks
Brookn, I saw you on another forum--got to get my "fix". I don't remember which one it was--you were using your dog's name for a login--anyway,I jumped around so much I was getting confused Just glad to be home!! Now back to orchids: I ,too, have a Sogo Grape and it is growing new roots, but otherwise it is just sitting there. Maybe it does need more light. Think I'll give it a shot...Nothing to lose

I've got mine under my T5 lights along with other phals that can't stop growing anything! 2 of my other phals have grown 2+ leaves and at least 10 new roots each. That is why it confuses me since these 2 are growing like crazy and this one completely sluggish.

Therese - I ALSO have a sogo grape that I purchased from Jerry at the same time - it is growing a new leaf and looks healthy - but no spike/flower like this plant. Mine are all just sitting under lowly T12 cheapie shop lights purchased from Lowes or Home Depot.

I used to use a 500watt metal halide and sodium light growing system some years ago.. It added about another 20 bucks on to the electric bill a month.. But sure could get some of those hard to flower dendrobiums to bloom.. lol

Anyways.. It sounds like the phals that are not liking your light system need more light.. natural light.. Morning sun/afternoon shade.. That one that is happy and growing and blooming likes that kind of light.. Looking forward to seeing more pics..

Mike or anyone else who might have this one, I read some where that this cross is a mini, is that true? The reason why I'm asking is that the leaves on both of the plants I received are quite small, at very most 5" in length but mainly around 4". Its still actively growing new roots; the 2nd plant I gave to my dad and am not sure how its doing.

An interesting story about this Phal. The first one I ever had was extremely fragrant. Since then I have examined several hundred and never had a fragrance again.

I lost track of which had the fragrance so it could easily have been sent to someone on the hybrid project. If someone develops a scent let me know a cloning may be in order.

I'm sorry I had not seen this thread before! I'm glad you didn't cut the spike, is it still in bloom? It's beautiful, and I love the spotting on this. ( It's the perfect Fall color too. )

Fragrant you say? I think I found another one to add to the many list of wishes.

I don't know if it's a mini or not. Jerry and Mike would know.
