Dend. Upin King

Just love the nobiles. I received (today) 3 Dendrobium Upin King 'Seranade' from Jerry. It's in a 5" pot. I'll use this thread for all updates and progress....

Here's a pic of what it will look like. This is the tag that was attached to each plant.

Let us know how it goes and I'm sure you know this already but give it lots of light, especially in winter.

I have an Upin Red but it's never flowered for me.

Bolero, thanks for that tip. I'm bright-light deprived in winter very sadly but on the bright side....I have a Dend. Oriental Smiles 'Fantasy' that went on to bloom for me this year so I'm hoping that this one will do as well. Do you have any pics you can share? Would love to see yours!

One reason for Nobiles not flowering is too much nitrogen during its bud setting stage. In the US that is from August to February. It is probably reversed in Australia.

It is best to stop all fertilizer during this period.

Also the plant needs a cooling to flower. It should have a 20 degree temperature drop from day to night with night temperatures around 50 or lower. I have frozen them into the low 20s without even having a bud drop.

They can easily take 10,000 foot candles of light but I have also flowered them in under 4000.

The blooms look gorgeous Sandra!! I still haven't had much luck with my 2, but I'm
working on getting them to bloom. Good luck with yours.

Jerry, thanks for the tip on the temp drop, I'll try that this year.

Of course and I should have mentioned this as well. I stop fertilising now until at least September when it starts to warm up. I know that they will flower at lower light levels but it seems that the best results with flowering up and down the cane would come with maximum possible light. Of course you will still get flowers even at lower light levels.

The Upin Red I have has never actually flowered, I've had success recently with a Don Thompson. I think also my minimum temps here are a little too cool for the plant to flower properly.
