Unhappy Den. Yellow Song in Fight and Lost

I had a tragic accident last night. My Den Yellow Song 'Canary' went through what appears to be a pillow fight and lost. (Teenagers ) The tallest cane got bent and now it's mushy this morning. What do I do now??? Do I cut above the mush, attempt a splint or buy another??? I need help guys!!!!

Here are pics of the aftermath.

I'd straighten it out and tie it on a skewer or something to hold it up..and see how it does the next few days?

Jenny, I think, knowing you, you'd be happier to start out with one that will potentially bloom for you next blooming season. If that cane is mushy, it will need to be removed. The other cane looks fine and while it won't die and will eventually start gaining momentum, it has already suffered a setback and you may not see blooms next season. You can always add this one to a new one, a good thing.

Amputate below the mush. The cane may then throw some keikis or possible branch off?

Is that one of Jerry's? Is it a Yamamoto den? Even if it's mushy I would not cut it off. I went to a website about Yamamoto dens and it said that the keikis were produced on the upper nodes as a result of breakage Just stake it and watch the mushy part--don't want it to spread!

You might want to order another one if the blooms are going to make you happier, 'cause I don't think you can count on blooms in the near future. Then you can put keikis, old canes, and new plant in a single pot and have a grrrrrreat show Things are looking up...

Oh Jenny! I feel so bad...I have to agree with the majority. Try staking it, and purchase another one to go in the pot with it. Eventually, it will be o.k.-
Good luck!

I want to thank everyone for all of the responses It's really going down hill, actually to the point I might not have to cut it cause it's going to fall off on it's own. Really disappointing. I guess no blooms off the bat for me on this one. LoL, I told my son that he'll have to sleep without any pillows cause I was going to burn them. He feels bad as it is, but no crying over spilt milk right?

I know it'll be fine, it's just I juuuust got the darn thing a week ago and the poor thing is going through pillow fights already!

I'm already contemplating on buying another. It was sooo funny. Todd, (bless his ever loving, stinking heart) as soon as he seen it he told me to order another one. You have to love that

Well the staking bit was a bust....I went to attempt it and it just popped off! I don't know to laugh or cry cause it's the first hybrid tragedy and it's only been a week. I peroxided and cinnamoned the mush area and it started to seal itself almost instantly.

I've been in touch with Jerry. He has assured me that these are tough as nails and that a new growth should take it's place. I can get flowers on the one old cane, if not, maybe both All hope is not lost!!! YAY!!!

A pic of the horror.....

Viewer discretion is advised......

The left side is where the cane was lost.

An overall of what it looks like now.....

I think you'll get new growth. At least the tragedy happened during Spring, when you can expect new growth!

Ah teenagers, I am sending happy thoughts to you, and growing thoughts to your plant. I know that it seems so tragic, Bob a few months ago chewed the 3 spikes coming out of my Dend. NOID. Mine recovered, but aborted a new growth because of it. I was just more fortunate that mine had several canes and they weren't damaged (it is finally after long talks and negotiating producing 2 new growths ) I believe that it will send out some growth for you. If not you already have permission to buy another .

Jenny, that doesn't look bad at all. I'm glad the opportunity wasn't there to keep it staked only because I feared that rot would spread even further. Now, it's done, Dends are growing right now here in the states so I really think you're going to be pleasantly surprised. And just imagine, this one along side a brand new one and what this will all look like next year.

Leave it to the Orchid Geeks to constantly encourage others to buy more orchids. No one warned me that orchids can be addicting!

Come on little dend.... put out some new growth to lift Articuno's spirit!

Oh,,,ouch, I feel the pain! If you buy another, it will make you feel better. You can put this one in the "long term results" area and put the new one in the "immediate results" area. You have my permission.

Those top two photos after the... ummm --amputation-- are great, Jenny. The colors wonderful. The patterning and exquisite detail of the sheaths is amazing. The shape of the left hand cane.... It's like discovering a new art form.

Trying to look at the bright side of things.....I think this is a great learning opportunity for our project. Orchids are tough and can teach us that they are not as fragile as we like to perceive them to be. It will rebound and so will you. Now for your son......I'm sure he feels very bad and it will never happen again. At least maybe not in your house!

My husband recently broke a lamp throwing a toy football around with my two Golden Retrievers chasing after it. He looked at me like a deer caught in the headlights, and after a few moments of shock and realization that he is not NINE but an ADULT blurted out "I bought it, so I can break it." I thought okay great, new lamps! The football game ensued and I went shopping. No harm, no foul.

Now see, if that was my man,,,,He would have busted out laughing....I would have pulled my hair out Love it!

I'm looking at the bright side of things...Here is a pic of the plant that I just took today. (I'm taking pics of plants of all the babies for documenting growth ) It's changing quite rapidly. I don't know if it's going down hill or "morphing"? The cane was somewhat soft, now it's starting to get a little hard. Hopefully it's not dying.

Maybe getting ready to throw a keiki? (fingers crossed!)

Here is the repot on the Yellow Songs. I staked and tied the "recovery buddy" just in case something drastic might happen. Can't be too cautious around here.

They're in a mix of small bark, perlite, charcoal, tiny bits of moss, and hydroton. I also put some worm castings that Jerry gave me into the mix. Good stuff!

I have had a lot of damaged canes on Nobile and the danger of rot spreading like on Cattleya is not present in Nobiles. The cane may die all the way but it has never spread on me. Any small Nobile I lost have been by drying out completely not rot.

A very similar, if not the same thing, happened to my Sea Mary Snow King last year. There was no physical damage to it however, but the canes just got squishy in the middle and just died. I tried saving it but there was no turning back. Sorry to hear that you've dealt with this.

So far so good. The second cane from the one I now call Pillow Fight is doing great. I think Recovery Buddy is really helping out. No more spread of the mushiness, and Recovery Buddy is even growing more leaves

Good and bad news.

The original Den. Yellow Song I think went to orchid heaven. (Sharyn I need a cross for this one, LOL.) The cane hollowed out and dried.

Recovery Buddy on the other hand is doing great. I'm so glad that I got him. He grew three new leaves and an inch.

I still have the original in with recovery buddy in the same pot. Maybe I'm weird thinking that there might be a resurrection or something, LOL. Actually I'm worried that I might disturb a good thing, so I leave it as it is.

Jenny: I'll be making more than one cross today. My kitchen window just blew out of the frame inside the house, taking my glass shelf with it. My orchids & african violets on the shelf were blown right out of their boots and flew all over the kitchen. I'm so ticked-off right now I could cry.

So much for leaving a window open near the Windy City.

I'm off to make a martini (maybe two) and then clean up the mess. Depending on my mood, this could be another R.I.P. day.

I am sooo sorry! I hope that the damage is only minimal. Nothing else inside got destroyed did it? Be careful picking up glass. I hope everything will be okay.

Sharyn -- Sorry about your window. I hope you didn't lose everything in that window. Take care in cleaning the broken glass.

Jenny -- Sorry about the first Den. But glad to see the second one doing well.

Well, at least it looks like ALL is not lost! Here's hoping that second cane stays healthy enough to support some new keikis!

Jenny & Arlene: Thanks for your good thoughts. This was the weirdest accident I've ever had. Cleaned the windows (including the storms). I replaced all the windows back in the tracks. The last, an innermost window, wasn't sitting properly in the track. Because of the winds, the window blew it inward, hit the glass shelf, and slid behind it onto my counter top - just as I was standing there and caught it from crashing to the floor.

The orchids & african violets flew across the room, making a huge mess. Cleaned it up and threw out most of the damaged stuff - many were seedlings that didn't enjoy the kitchen tornado effect. I ran out of patience so just repotted one larger paph and threw out the rest.

Today, I start over with a "new attitude." The windows are clean, the curtains washed & pressed, the violets & some orchids are now in their great "resting place." R.I.P. you little boogars. So much for flying orchids and kitchen tornados!

Jenny: Hang in there with that softened cane - it may just dry up and it's possible you may get some new growth. I had some frozen orchids from 18 months ago that have rejunvenated. I'm not saying that they look pretty, but they survived and actually started some new growth recently.

Thanks for your kind thoughts. (Insert little guy who's very sorry about high-jacking this thread). In my next life, I will be returning as a very tall person who will not be vertically challenged when replacing windows into their tracks. (insert big grin).

Hehehehe.....

With that newly found attitude and the sad loss of the babies, it would be a good time to get some new ones and cheer yourself up.

Gosh, that sounds like a freaky accident. Good thing you weren't injured with the glass Sharyn.

Well, to the both of you. May they rest in peace and may there be many more resurrections of orchids to replace them.

Somehow I missed the bit about the kitchen tornado when I left my last message. I'm so sorry Sharyn... that sounds really scary. RIP little seedlings! *sigh*

Jenny, looks like your Den rebounded quite well! If your in the mood for experimentation you might want to try with the dead/yellowish cane that moss and plastic bag trick, try and get one or two more growths.

I was checking for an update on "Pillowfight" and just saw about Sharyn's kitchen disaster. I'm so glad you're okay, and so sorry about your plants (not to mention everything you had to clean up). Please accept my very tardy good wishes.

As for Pillowfight ... it's only the one cane that looks iffy, right?

I figured I'd just leave it in the pot and see what it does. That's the experiment. If it loves me it'll grow. If not, I'm buying a Den. Oriental Smile 'Fantasy'

Jenny: What's happening with the "good" Den Yellow Song? I think we got ours around the same time. Mine is just status quo right now. It's not growing and not croaking - just kind of sitting on the patio doing nothing. No leaf loss, no growth, no nothing.

Orchidementia: Thanks for your kind words. I had a bit of a mess to clean up, lost a little patience and threw out a bunch of damaged seedlings. Today, I found that one of my larger paphs got damaged more than I thought. I was sad but thought: It's not the end of the world. After the "real" tornados this week, I can't complain about losing a few orchids. Some folks in our region have lost their homes and suffered much more with the recent storms. This bizzare weather seems to be all over the country. Hope you are all safe.

Well, I too had an accident the other day. I was hanging all the Vanda seedling baskets on a curtain rod. I guess I added one too many cause the rod/drapes all fell in a big crash including all the screws that were used to mount the hardware. Good thing no real damage to the orchids. I never even thought twice about the rod not being strong enough to hold. Now I know better. Sheesh!!!

The "Recovery Buddy" is growing new leaves right now. Odd thing is that one of the new leaves at the top cinched, and I'll have to post a pic to show what I'm talking about. It's doing pretty good. Growth has slowed compared to a month ago though.

Here's the cinched leaf. It took it long enough to pop out so that I could get a better pic.

See Brookn, I know that one of your plants did the same thing, and I think it was too much humidity that did this too mine and caused the leaf to "stick" to itself. That's the only thing that I can come up with.
