Unhappy Den. Yellow Song in Fight and Lost

I had a tragic accident last night. My Den Yellow Song 'Canary' went through what appears to be a pillow fight and lost. (Teenagers ) The tallest cane got bent and now it's mushy this morning. What do I do now??? Do I cut above the mush, attempt a splint or buy another??? I need help guys!!!!

Here are pics of the aftermath.

I'd straighten it out and tie it on a skewer or something to hold it up..and see how it does the next few days?

Jenny, I think, knowing you, you'd be happier to start out with one that will potentially bloom for you next blooming season. If that cane is mushy, it will need to be removed. The other cane looks fine and while it won't die and will eventually start gaining momentum, it has already suffered a setback and you may not see blooms next season. You can always add this one to a new one, a good thing.

Amputate below the mush. The cane may then throw some keikis or possible branch off?

Is that one of Jerry's? Is it a Yamamoto den? Even if it's mushy I would not cut it off. I went to a website about Yamamoto dens and it said that the keikis were produced on the upper nodes as a result of breakage Just stake it and watch the mushy part--don't want it to spread!

You might want to order another one if the blooms are going to make you happier, 'cause I don't think you can count on blooms in the near future. Then you can put keikis, old canes, and new plant in a single pot and have a grrrrrreat show Things are looking up...

Oh Jenny! I feel so bad...I have to agree with the majority. Try staking it, and purchase another one to go in the pot with it. Eventually, it will be o.k.-
Good luck!

I want to thank everyone for all of the responses It's really going down hill, actually to the point I might not have to cut it cause it's going to fall off on it's own. Really disappointing. I guess no blooms off the bat for me on this one. LoL, I told my son that he'll have to sleep without any pillows cause I was going to burn them. He feels bad as it is, but no crying over spilt milk right?

I know it'll be fine, it's just I juuuust got the darn thing a week ago and the poor thing is going through pillow fights already!

I'm already contemplating on buying another. It was sooo funny. Todd, (bless his ever loving, stinking heart) as soon as he seen it he told me to order another one. You have to love that

Well the staking bit was a bust....I went to attempt it and it just popped off! I don't know to laugh or cry cause it's the first hybrid tragedy and it's only been a week. I peroxided and cinnamoned the mush area and it started to seal itself almost instantly.

I've been in touch with Jerry. He has assured me that these are tough as nails and that a new growth should take it's place. I can get flowers on the one old cane, if not, maybe both All hope is not lost!!! YAY!!!

A pic of the horror.....

Viewer discretion is advised......

The left side is where the cane was lost.

An overall of what it looks like now.....

I think you'll get new growth. At least the tragedy happened during Spring, when you can expect new growth!

Ah teenagers, I am sending happy thoughts to you, and growing thoughts to your plant. I know that it seems so tragic, Bob a few months ago chewed the 3 spikes coming out of my Dend. NOID. Mine recovered, but aborted a new growth because of it. I was just more fortunate that mine had several canes and they weren't damaged (it is finally after long talks and negotiating producing 2 new growths ) I believe that it will send out some growth for you. If not you already have permission to buy another .

Jenny, I agree with Brook. You'll see a new growth before you know it.

Jenny, that doesn't look bad at all. I'm glad the opportunity wasn't there to keep it staked only because I feared that rot would spread even further. Now, it's done, Dends are growing right now here in the states so I really think you're going to be pleasantly surprised. And just imagine, this one along side a brand new one and what this will all look like next year.

Leave it to the Orchid Geeks to constantly encourage others to buy more orchids. No one warned me that orchids can be addicting!

Come on little dend.... put out some new growth to lift Articuno's spirit!

Oh,,,ouch, I feel the pain! If you buy another, it will make you feel better. You can put this one in the "long term results" area and put the new one in the "immediate results" area. You have my permission.

Those top two photos after the... ummm --amputation-- are great, Jenny. The colors wonderful. The patterning and exquisite detail of the sheaths is amazing. The shape of the left hand cane.... It's like discovering a new art form.

Trying to look at the bright side of things.....I think this is a great learning opportunity for our project. Orchids are tough and can teach us that they are not as fragile as we like to perceive them to be. It will rebound and so will you. Now for your son......I'm sure he feels very bad and it will never happen again. At least maybe not in your house!

My husband recently broke a lamp throwing a toy football around with my two Golden Retrievers chasing after it. He looked at me like a deer caught in the headlights, and after a few moments of shock and realization that he is not NINE but an ADULT blurted out "I bought it, so I can break it." I thought okay great, new lamps! The football game ensued and I went shopping. No harm, no foul.

Now see, if that was my man,,,,He would have busted out laughing....I would have pulled my hair out Love it!

I'm looking at the bright side of things...Here is a pic of the plant that I just took today. (I'm taking pics of plants of all the babies for documenting growth ) It's changing quite rapidly. I don't know if it's going down hill or "morphing"? The cane was somewhat soft, now it's starting to get a little hard. Hopefully it's not dying.

Maybe getting ready to throw a keiki? (fingers crossed!)
