I was bad today!

I cannot believe the wonderful plants that are available at my Lowe's. They had box after box of orchids. An entire baggie box of 4" Catt hybrids, a box of Vandas, a box of Species, and several small trays of mixed Vandas, and Catts. They also had some potted up not in baggies that were blooming. My oh my I was so bad. I bought 6 plants! And I had to walk away from at least another half dozen I would have also liked.

I have pics...starting from left to right, front row first, here are the names:

Tolumnia Jairak Firm No. 471 (I can't find this name in Wiz at all but it's SO cute)

Ascda. Theresa Marie (the tag shows the hybrid names but this is the name now according to Wiz, V. Dr. Anek x Ascda. Suksamran Spots)

Guaritonia Why Not (Guarianthe aurantiaca x Broughtonia sanguinea) in bud!

Den. spectabile (This was one HUGE bag baby!)

C. Motte Spot 'Paradise' (this one should be really spotty!)

Eny. Jackie Bright ' Hilo Stars' (Syn. Eplc. - I've wanted one of these for awhile!)

Close-ups tomorrow of my tiny Tolumnia!

NO, you were very good today! That's a nice haul of some beauties. I would stay flat out broke if we had a local store that carried such healthy orchids. How can you be asked to resist such temptation?

Nice plants, especially for a big lot store!

excuse me for a second...

your lowes is soooo cool, we dont have anywhere as cool over here. they are some amazing plants, i would LOVE to add a couple more tolumnia to my collection, i love 'em.

and the dendrobium spectabile i have wanted one of them for yonks.

and a vanda you only ever see vanda's in orchid specific nurseries (but when you do there's normally bajillions )

oh and have you heard the story about the 'Why Not'?

plus i must admire your constraint, very impressive, i would have gone crazy.

Very nice haul!! Will you be going back today? And I too would like to see a pic of a "bag baby" pre pot. I have never seen them here either.

This topic made me smile big time, haha.
Great haul, Shann. I wish my Lowes had selections like that. It's mostly just Phals, Catts, and Oncidiums. Lately it's seen a bit of a lull and has only been carrying noid Phals.
I would flip if they had Vandas there. Also, that Tolumnia is adorable!

Nice plants, especially for a big lot store!
I was so impressed I wrote them an email today complimenting the store and the employee who works in that department. He also grows several hundred orchids so I am sure that has something to do with it. Plus he takes some time to care for the plants and they last much longer than you would normally see at a box store.

I was shocked by the spectabile myself. I had to practice more restraint that usual as my husband was right there. All those orchids and the look in my eyes kinda freaked him out. LOL

What's the story about the Why Not?

Call or email them and let me know you would like to see a better selection because they are capable of providing it. They had blue Catts and Spotty Cats, tons of babies and just all kinds of excitement.

You should have seen the look on my face when I saw all those orchids. I think it was like a hunter finding its prey or something. LOL

Oh I don't think I can go back today unless I find a really good excuse...maybe tomorrow. I was so happy about it I dreamed about going back last night but couldn't find them and freaked out! LOL

LOL...I was enabled by a friend who said they got in a new order on Friday. I told my husband dinner would have to wait because we were going to Lowes. I can't believe he puts up with my antics sometimes! I might sneak back tomorrow when I go "grocery" shopping.

Yeah it's kinda a double edged sword! I need to find a coupon or something before I go back! You know I do need a hanger for that Vanda...maybe I need to go back for that?!

Definatley try and email Lowes and let them know you want to see this at your store. You never know if they might listen. I love orchid surprises!

Shameful...just shameful! You have been bad...but only because you left the other 6 there.

It must be a Florida thing vs up N here because the ONLY orchids my Lowe's (any of them) get are NoID phals. And maybe the occasional NoID Oncid. Lucky you!

I was at my Lowe's last Saturday, and they had the usual suspects - couple of NoID Phals, couple of intergeneric Oncs., and they had a Den that had a tag - Salaya Candy. I almost got it, but then I seemed to remember someone saying that that name has never been registered. I got out of there with a peace lily and an African violet. (whew!)

I was just checking the website for my local Lowes, up here in Ontario Canada, but they don't seem to have indoor plants.

I did see the blue orchids @ Home Depot the other day - glad I didn't splurge and buy one - well, the white does seem quite pretty though...

You're right, Brigitte. I seem to remember that Salaya Candy isn't a registered plant. But I like the one I got last year anyway. (It's only a semi-NoID)
Cheers,
Tony

Last time I looked at Lowes all they had were phals that had a hefty dose of spider mites. maybe they will get a variety of orchids in when the weather warms up. Big box store orchids are the only ones I can afford unless I get some through the mail. Nurseries and florists are way too pricey - 80 to 100 dollars for phals and higher. Great find for you! I would be going there everyday. Would probably have to find an orchids anonymous 12 step group.

After seeing this I had to make a run to my Lowes. They didn't have quite the selection as yours, but a few bag babies worth looking at. I ended up getting a B. Nodosa 'Remar' x B. Nodosa 'Mas Mejor' that looks to be in pretty good shape. I plan to re-pot it sometime later this week. Any recommendations on potting medium would be appreciated.

I dumpster dived earlier into my trash and pulled out 3 of the 4 baggie cards and one bag and mesh.

Each orchid is in a bag with a mesh screen over the pot and is wrapped tight with a rubber band. The bag is stapled shut with a color photo of what your orchid could look like (purple, red, pink, species...etc). The back of each card has general care info. The small orchids in 2" pots just have the mesh and a color card stapled to the top.

Shannara, the only tolumnia registered by Kanith Somboonphon - the "Jairak" guy - is Jairak Rainbow.

It's pretty variable, and as much as I hate guessing names from flowers, I'd bet that's your plant's name.

Thanks Shann! Seeing that Den spectabile bag baby from Better Gro gives me hope that I may bump into that one sometime at my local Lowes Big Box... Here I come
Best,

Oh wow I think I need to move! We never get a selection of bag babies like those here. I mostly see catts, sometimes dens. If I ever ran across a bagged vanda at lowes I think I would pass out cold. I did find a enc. jackie bright 'Hilo Stars' a few months back. Hopefully it might bloom this spring.

There was also a number of Den. aggregatum and Maxillaria tenuifolia. I am counting the days to the next delivery. LOL

I finally got them all potted up tonight. Took several days to get around to them all (these and the ones in my other thread), but so far so good. I must say the roots on these bag babies were really really good. The Vanda baby was potted in straight charcoal from the grower. The rest were all in a bark mix with some nice foam cubes at the bottom for airflow. All of them are in aliflor, stalite, and charcoal now. For the price I am one happy camper!

Oh almost forgot to mention that Jackie Bright had two plants in the pot! One mature size and a seedling size with a new growth coming! Yahoo!!!

Thanks all for the comments. I enjoyed reading them.
